Why pay 300$ for a pair of headphones that sounds virtually the same as a 160$ pair? They're not moving from your desk, there's no need for pure metal frame.

You have better options at that price.

This is why I'm asking for advice... Can you list the other options i have?

DT900 are not great IMO - bass is bloated and overdone, and one hell of a treble spike. Sennheiser will offer you better fidelity in that price range with the HD600 or HD650, but if you want to go with beyerdynamic, the DT880 is a bit better.

That's not most people's experience... I personally couldn't deal with the treble spike but overall it's still a great headphone at the price that the pro versions usually go for.

Biggest problem is dealing with pricing and availability in Canada. Is there a particular retailer you're looking to buy from or just wherever has the best prices?

It depends which people you ask. Most headphone enthusiasts would agree with me.

You're literally the first person I've heard be so negative towards them, and I've taken a few laps around the net.

Would you recommend the the AD700X over these 3?

No. I've owned both the 500X and 700X - they might as well be the same thing, so there's no reason to get the 700X.

I'm going out of the mainstream, by saying you don't really need a $300 headphone, if used strictly for gaming. If for music, then yeah, get the best headphone your wallet allows you to, but for gaming only, you'd be too busy playing games to listen to sound quality anyway. And yeah, I have had good experience with the AD700 for gaming, very very wide, good for 3D positioning. I'd imagine the AD700x is good too. But some people say the AD500x is sounding pretty much the same as the AD700x, so you'd save some bucks.

... don't know how to respond to that, what I said about them is pretty much objectively correct and widely known to be the case in headphone enthusiast circles. They are massively coloured headphones. Bloated upper bass, little sub bass, peaky treble. If you like them, you like them, but that is a realistic - not negative - assessment of their character.

Oh, I agree its colored, but calling the bass bloated sounds pretty negative to me. Even amongst "headphone enthusiasts" not everyone likes flat response headphones.

Realistically, It's not about whether I like them or not - it just seemed like you were being overly negative about them despite their popularity.

What 'neutral' even is has become a matter of contention in headphone enthusiast circles. What mesaures flat on a dummy head, IMO does not sound flat. Full size head phones need to be up 3-5db between 20-100hz - IEMs more like 8-10db.

"Boosted" bass is perceptually "neutral" because we miss out on the full body absorption of low frequencies with headphones, and outer ear absorption with IEMs.

That said what thw DT990 does - rising in a 10db hump between 20-100hz that falls right back down again by 500hz - that is what is called 'bloat'.

The actual deep bass between 20-100hz is rolling off and the mid bass between 100-200hz is massively boosted.

I'm not saying you aren't allowed to like it, but I think it's fair for me to make people aware of it on a thread people might read for advice on them.

At the same rough price there are many other options, from Focal, NAD, Sennheiser, that are well worth considering.

Do I really need to explain the negative connotations behind that word? I'm not disagreeing with you on the facts, and I likewise believe there are better options for the price in Canada ATM. It just sounds like you're being a little harsh on the DT990's (top kek at that irony). In order to "make people aware of it on a thread people might read for advice on them" I think it's important to note that the Pro versions in the US are often sub-$200, making them a poor comparison to the other headphones you're pitting them against.

It's a well worn phrase - based on the fact that it looks like a fat belly on a frequency plot:

fr.png

It's not the same as a headphone simply having a little extra emphasis in the bass -

Focal_SpiritProClassic_Graph_Compare.jpg

With these headphones, the bass is a emphasised (as I believe it should be with headphones to sound natural) - but it is tamed down by the time we get to 300hz-ish where the mids begin.

Compare that to the DT990 where we have little sub bass, a huge... you hate the word "bloat" clearly but I don't know what else to call it... "hump"? Does that work for you? OK a huge "hump" in the mid bass to mids area which deeply colours the sound (as do the treble peaks).

The point is, you are allowed to like the sound of these if you like the sound of these. No one can tell you what you do or don't like BUT - I am also allowed to point out that they are objectively a deeply flawed set of headphones.

There are much, much worse, no doubt, and they don't sound awful, but there are much, much better as well in a similar price range.

Especially when you look at the plot of headphones like the NAD HP50 with Sean Olive's proposed adjustment to the compensation curve:

140321_Blog_HarmanResponseFR_NADVISOHP50

Pretty impressive. And they sound fantastic too.

@Stefky what he meant is when you say bloated it's like you're saying the bass sounds distorted and loose.

Atleast that's what I think when you say bloated, I'm sure he thinks the same.

Yes, I guess that is another way of using the term, and from what I remember also fits the DT990 pretty well, not so much distorted, but loose certainly.

Anyway, there is no point continuing on with the discussion. ShearMe loves the DT990, I think they are deeply flawed. There isn't much further we can go without going around in circles.

??

For not agreeing with you?

No, this whole argument has just been ridiculous.

I didn't mean to get into a debate on what the DT990's sound like, I don't like them personally, and to top it off you keep saying the same things over and over without addressing anything I say despite me agreeing with nearly all of it. All I wanted to point out was the unfair comparisons + your obvious dislike of the DT990, and maybe start some friendly conversation about various headphones.

*shrugs* not really sure what you mean. I've just been responding to posts as they come. Didn't mean any offence.
