Can laptops with AMD APUs support faster memory?

This asus laptop seems to be a great value
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231521

  • AMD A-Series A10-5750M (2.50GHz)
  • 8GB Memory 750GB HDD
  • AMD Radeon HD 8670M 2GB
  • 1920 x 1080

lets say this laptop did not have a dedicated gpu. would simple apu only laptops benefit from faster ram?

1. Do OEM laptop motherboards even support faster memory?
2. Would upgrading the stock 1600mhz ram to higher speed ram yield better gaming performance?
    -
(i know this is true for desktops but does the same translate to laptops?)
3. Is it safe to run faster memory in a non-"gaming" laptop?

Ideally you should get 2133 or faster rated RAM for your PC with an APU. Since APU's GPU cores utilise system's RAM for graphic processing, faster RAM helps speed up the process which in turns runs games smoother at a consistently high FPS.

It should translate. They're working in the same way.

As for upgradability, that depends on the specific board. And because with general use laptops intended for retail, companies tend to have a billion different model names for every slight difference (even the same product between stores) that aren't even listed on their website, I have no idea how to check this one. However, most laptops I've encountered are listed at a max of 1600.

CPU-AMD FX 8350 @ 4.9Ghz | GPU-Sapphire 7970 OC | Motherboard-AsRock Extreme9 990fx | RAM-8GB Mushkin Blackline Ridgeback

Case-NZXT Switch 810 | Heatsink-NZXT HAVIK | SSD-Samsung 840 250GB | HDD-Seagate Barricuda 1TB; WD Green 2TB
PSU-Seasonic X-Series 850 Watt | Mouse-Razer Naga | Keyboard-Razer Blackwidow | Speakers-Logitech z623

The higher speed memory generally runs at higher voltage. You will have to check the documentation for the particular laptop regarding RAM support.

Also yes, higher speed RAM will increase FPS. However you will be better investing the cost of the RAM into a better laptop with a dedicated GPU.

My Lenovo G505S has the A10-5750M and it's BIOS won't support RAM faster than 1866. It came with 6gb 1600mhz which I swapped out for some Corsair 2x4gb 1866 and saw ~12FPS increase in most games.

It all depends on the particular BIOS and what it will support.
