Oh, my bad. :(

Supreme Commander Forged Alliance is the best one out there IMO.

The game still has an active multiplayer community at www.faforever.com .

Red Alert series are good too. And C&C Generals. And Empire Earth.

Age of Empires?

The rerelease of Age Of Mythologies just came out yesterday, I loved the original of that, but haven't seen how this "Extended Edition" compares.

The Age of games in general are good.

Rise of Nations.

The stone cannot know why the chisel cleaves it; the iron cannot know why the fire scorches it. When thy life is cleft and scorched, when death and despair leap at thee, beat not thy breast and curse thy evil fate, but thank the Builder for the trials that shape thee.

My top list

Sins of a solar empire rebellion

Shogun 2

Supreme commander + forged alliance

ARMA 3 (if Zeus counts)

These are my favorites.

If strategy is your goal, go for Shogun 2.

If you like space battles and upgrades, and fleets (who the hell doesn't), go SOASER.

If you like ground battles, and destroying the enemy's base, then go supreme.

ARMA 3 Zeus, if you like to play around with AI, trying to give a challenge to the players on the ground. (This is serious fun if you do it right)

Spoiler

Case Bitfenix Ghost, Mobo Asus Maximus VIII Ranger, CPU i7 6700K @4.2 Ghz cooled by Arctic cooling Freezer i30, (barely). GPU Nvidia GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 @1519Mhz core, RAM 16Gb Crucial Ballistix CL16 @2400Mhz. SSD 128GB Sandisk Ultra Plus as my OS drive. HDD's  1TB  Seagate ST31000524AS its OEM, 3TB Seagate Barracuda, 2x 500GB WDC Blue (RAID 0)

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

Age of Empires 2 HD awesome game for the multilayer and it can be a bunch of fun playing with friends. Warning quite High Skill threshold there are people who have literally bean playing religiously since 1999 and you will get destroyed in high ELO matches. Though there is still a very active player base and you can usually find matches that are new player friendly.

Great RTS game with a active competitive seen and still supported by the devs :)

Civ 4 (and maybe 5) and Crusader Kings II

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

As I get older I get angrier more cynical, meaner. I feel some warning posts coming. I feel a ban coming. I was warned.

forget about age of retarded graphics.

Age of mythology is...4 years in advance when it came out

Thats a lot!

get it with titan expansion.

It was so in advance they(someone else) did a ''remake'' changing NOTHING on steam, do not buy the remake. Yolo torrentz instead.

Age of mythology is a goofy spin off of the age of empires series. I am not saying it is bad but imo the multilayer is no where near as refined which hurts its longevity. Also saying that you would play aom over aoe2 because of aom's superior graphics is retarded.

because much more, do you prefer to play aoe instead of aom for its inferior graphics, that is nonesense.

I prefer aoe for the game play which I believe to be superior. I think both have such old graphics that it is not really a factor in my decision making.

Also one game is not automatically better than another simply because of superior graphics. Cod Ghosts has the highest graphical fidelity of any of the cod games but  is considered by many to be one of the weakest games in the series.

"Planetary Annihilation" is in a nice playable state right now if you want to check that out.
http://steamcommunity.com/app/233250
$50 is rather steep though. So grab it when it goes on sale

If not "Supreme Commander Foraged Alliance", plus the "Foraged Alliance Forever" mod will keep you occupied for ages. If you don't like the graphics, there are mods for that too... :D

Company of Heroes is a blast if you like WW2 games. But so is 'close combat a bridge to far' and 'close combat Normandy Invasion'

http://www.old-games.com/download/5151/close-combat-2-a-bridge

While we are checking out old games you've might have missed. Check out the original "Homeworld" too. Homeworld 2 is also very good.
http://www.homeworldremastered.com/

That's my list of must play RTS games for now....

wowowow. AOE 2 right?

Aoe 2 runs 3fps animations while AOM runs highframerate animations.

Literral

I would like to know where you get your numbers from because I have no frame rate issues with AoE2 HD but frame rate ofp the animations is not really even a factor in my decision making. AoE2 is just balanced better and works better for multiplayer which is why I prefer it. They could re-create Age of Mythology using a "modern" rts engine such as in Dota 2 or LOL and I would still prefer AoE2HD as it is now.
