OS cloned from SSD to new NVME SSD not booting - confusion

refinedskillz

Hi all,

I've purchased a new 1TB nvme drive and I've cloned my OS from my 250gb SSD to the 1tb nvme one using Macrium reflect. However, I cannot seem to boot from it and I cant understand why. I've had a browse around and saw things suggesting disabling CSM and the like nothing has worked, something to do with boot keys and windows secure boot? It's a bit confusing and I don't really understand why it's different and what I need to do, can someone clear the water for me here?  Am I better off just installing windows fresh on my new drive?

Have you cloned all partitions? On your source disk to target disk? If so you didn’t have to change any settings in bios.

if you had the OS installed on a SATA device then only the SATA driver (e.g. StorAhci) is enabled for "boot start",
while the NVMe driver is deferred to a later phase (and the same for IDE, SCSI, etc.).

One way to "fix" this is to boot Windows from your old SSD again and run the command:

sc.exe config stornvme start= boot

This will activate the Windows' built-in NVMe driver during the early boot phase. Once that's done,
re-clone the system to the new SSD. (Note that rebooting may cause Windows to deactivate the driver again.)

Also make sure that the partitions are aligned correctly.

Partition alignment is very important.
