Can anyone please give me a recommendation for a new network switch that will utilize my new 5 gpbs connection?

Cat5e in theory is good up to 2.5gbps

If you want 5gbps everywhere in your house, you'd probably need to upgrade to Cat6 or Cat6a wiring, OR add fiber in parallel to each room.

Servethehome has recently released a review of switches with 4+ 2.5gbps ports and SOME switches also had 10gbps ports.

Personally, I don't think it's worth it - I'd suggest spending a bit more on a switch with a bunch of 10g ports

Unixsurplus may have something not listed on their website, right now the stuff they have listed with 10g RJ45 and SFP+ is on the higher end stuff, with 24+ ports, from around $1000.

Last year, I asked them about something mid-range and they had in stock 2 units of Juniper EX4200 (24 x 10g SFP+ and 4x1g SFP with two power supplies) for $275 : EX4200 Ethernet Switch with Vitual Chassis Technology Datasheet - ex4200-ethernet-switch-with-vitual-chassis-technology.pdf

If you want new, $215 for a 8 port SFP+ is not bad : https://www.amazon.com/MokerLink-Support-Bandwidth-Unmanaged-Ethernet/dp/B09W24RZDC/

If your lengths are under 35 meters or so, you can use rj45 to sfp+ transceivers.

I am getting 5gbps fiber installed next week in my home.

I will be using a AXE16000 Quad-Band 16-Stream Wi-Fi 6E Router with Two 10G Ports.

I currently have a TP-Link TL-SG1024 24-port gigabit switch.

The house is wired with Cat5e.

I have three that have 2.5gbps+ LAN ports, two work computers with 1gbps LAN.

So at the moment three computers in total that support 2.5gbps+.

In the future I am planning on adding a 10gbps NAS via the router.

I was thinking of just getting a 5 or 8 port switch like the TP-Link TL-SG105-M2.

Would this be a good idea? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

When you go over 2.5GBPS you start looking at SFP modules for comms, usually fibre of some description. Take a look at Ubiquiti and Mikrotik for affordable options with lots of config options.

If you want to stick to ethernet cabling, I would look at something that has at least one 10GB port, and the rest at 2.5GB or better so that most of you devices can make decent use of the available bandwidth, if not quite all of it.

If you want to get full use, you will need to go 10GB all around, I think this would probably be decent in that case:

CRS312-4C+8XG-RM

Cat 5e is more than enough for 5gbps for home runs (i.e. 100-150ft), we have 2.5-10G running everywhere from the basement to the 2nd floor all over 5e. Otherwise I've had good luck with Unifi, if it's ever in stock.

Netgear has a 2.5Gb switch with 2 10Gb ports I believe is under $250.  I got the ms510txm-100nas which has 4x2.5, 4x10G and 2xSFP+

Wouldn't buy it ... too few ports ... you waste a 10g port connecting to router and you're left with one port that goes to what, your nas?  Then you're left with 4  2.5g ports ... why did you bother with 10g connection to router and 5g service if nothing can use it...

Thanks for all the replies and info!

I ended up going with the QSW-2104-2S for now.

I do want to add some UniFi PoE cameras at _some_ point. But don't have the budget at this time and at that point I think I would upgrade to the QSW-M2116P-2T2S and replace the TP-Link TL-SG1024 24-port gigabit switch.

Again thanks for the help! 😀
