CPU clock speed and tdp dropping while gaming.

I don't know whats happening but when i do gaming on my HP Pavilion gaming laptop, its CPU clock speed and TDP drops. I am facing a severe fps drop. I got a motherboard change, it fixed the problem for a while but now its happening again.  I tried undervolting the CPU. It fixed the problem but sometimes it happens again. Can someone provide a solution.

System Specs? CPU, RAM, GPU......

 

If you haven't already done so, install HWInfo. You can look at the various values in real-time or save a log file for a more detailed analysis. 

 

What are the temps reading?

 

Are your fans spinning? What RPM? If they are reporting zero, check to see if there is fluff or some other obstruction that might be stopping them from spinning.

 

Try changing the Windows Power Management Profile (Balanced, High Performance......)

 

Without knowing more, it looks like your CPU is cooking and throttling.

Without knowing more, it looks like your CPU is cooking and throttling.

CPU = Ryzen 5 5600H, RAM = 8 Gb, GPU = GTX 1650

CPU temp readings without undervolting = 95-96 degree C

fans are moving fine but loud.

CPU clock speed dropping from 4.2 GHz to 2.6 GHz or something while gaming and TDP is dropping from 30 something to 7 or 8

There's a line in HWInfo that lets you know if you are thermal throttling. I can't remember what the line is titled but the output is either yes or no. What is it reporting?

 

If it is temp related, is the laptop easily serviceable??? Can you remove the heatsink, fan and cpu to check there is sufficient thermal paste and the cooler is properly mounted?

Seems like thermal throttling, and TDP is not power draw.

That laptop has bad cooling design to begin with, so really I think the only way to do this is undervolt as much as you can, cooling pad, proper clean up every few months.

Ah i didn't checked hwinfo....lemmi check for thermal throttling.

The laptop is in warranty till June. Should I contact the customer care?

If its thermal throttling too quickly after going under load then I would definitely get them to look at it under warranty.

 

Hopefully, you'll get someone on the support line who knows what 'thermal throttling' is so the engineer knows what to do.

 

Make sure they add detailed notes on what you've done to diagnose the issue.

Hi buddy, yeh, both those are reporting that thermal limits have been reached so the CPU is throttling.

 

I'd get onto support and see what they can do.

 

The only other thing you could try to solve it yourself would be to get a can of compressed air / dust cleaner and give all the vents a dammed good skoosh. Might be a dust clog somewhere.
