Hi,

Im running

●Tomahawk b450 max

●Ryzen 5 3600 (Stock cooler)

●Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4x 8 GB) DDR4 3600 MHz

● Red dragon rx 5600 xt gpu

●wd 500gb m.2 ssd

●baracuda 2tb hd

●corsair rm750W

Enabled "game mode" and  a-xmp so running at 4.2ghz cpu 3600 mhz dram

When i run tests i get the following:

furmark 1920x1080 - 134 fps, gpu temp 72°c

Cinebench single core - cpu temp around 65°c,.score 1225, drawing 45watts

All seems resonable.

But when i run cinebench multicore  cpu temps shoot up so fast (hit 105c after about 5 seconds so I stopped it)

Is this just a case my cooler isnt up to the job or is it something ive possibly done in the build.

If its just the cooler, what do people recommend i upgrade to.

-edit-

Forgot to note im  running 3 intake 2 exhaust 120mm case fans

Maybe the cooler isn't making proper contact with the CPU. It definitely isn't normal. The stock cooler, while kind of trash, shouldn't be reaching 105˚C.

You could try removing it and changing the thermal paste. If that doesn't work, a new CPU cooler could definitely help.

I shall buy some new paste and try that soon as possible,  thankyou

What computer case are you using? Can we see some pictures? Are you sure you have the fans installed properly?

Hi, im using gamermax kage case.

Got front 3 fans as intake, rear and top as exhaust.

I belive its all set up correctly (can feel the air flow) but as its 1st build i may have messed something up.

That looks like a case with a glass front panel from what I can see when I looked it up. The front intakes is not very efficient being limited to pulling air from the sides. You can try this see how it works:

  1. Without moving the fans around you need to have the fan curves set properly in this configuration for that case. If possible, keep the CPU, rear, top, front upper and front lower fan on separate headers. This solution may not work being limited from poor front intake.
  2. Considering the the top is the best source for intake for this case and having less aggressive fans. Change it to 2 intake fans at the top and 2 intake at the front lower spots. Leave the rear as exhaust. Removing the top dust filter may improve the thermals. If this works well you could also get a higher RPM fan at the rear and have 3 matching front fans for aesthetic and slightly improved thermals.

You can take off the side glass panel and do your temperature testing just to see how it performs to get an idea what may be possible. It's best to set the fan curves from BIOS, but I recommend installing Fan Control software while testing so you don't have to keep resetting the computer and it also gives you options to control fans for GPU if you want more control. Once you have the fans adjusted you can just replicate similar settings in BIOS, but may not have GPU temperature.

What are results with Game Mode disabled?

Yea, that's pretty warm. Have you tried reseating the cooler? Make sure that it's tightened gradually and evenly in an X-pattern.

If temps don't improve much, a better cooler or undervolting would help. A negative 0.5-0.1v offset for example should be fine for stock settings without losing performance.

Normal peak all-core Turbo is around 3.9 GHz ~ 4.0 GHz.

I think 'Game Mode' just brute forces it to run at the max single-core Turbo 4.2 GHz, but on ALL cores.

Remounting the stock cooler, or a higher performing tower-style CPU cooler should significantly drop temperatures.

Just curious, did you noticed a significant (i.e. 5*C or more) temperature drop with JUST removing the glass side panel?

If you DO, then case airflow is contributing to the problem as well.

The neat thing about big heatsinks on small CPUs is that you can do things bigger CPUs cant.. like run semi passively.

I was able to run my old 3600XT at a static 4400MHz Linpack stable on my Le Grand Macho RT with no fan installed on the cooler, and case fans on low. I can run my 5800X3D with no fans on the cooler and just the stock fans that come with my case. Good luck with your many choices 🙂

I didnt  notice any real temp difference moving fans or taking the side panel off, i have new thermal paste arriving tomorrow so will try reseating my cpu cooler once thats here. If that doesnt solve it, i guess its time to upgrade cpu cooler
