Chrome Autofill Credit Card Prompting Windows Security Key

MrDevanWright

I don't recall changing any Windows or Google settings but now I am being forced to insert my security key when trying to autofill credit card data in Chrome even though I don't have a security key and have never set one up before. I have 2FA enabled on my Google account with prompts and SMS, but no security keys. I have 'For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device' disabled, as it was enabled but the Windows security prompt still comes up. This is so frustrating because Chrome will not autofill my credit card information without Windows approving it. Why is Windows even a part of this? Absurd. It started a while ago asking for my log on PIN, then it was asking for a security key but allowed me to change it to PIN, and now it's security key only.

Chrome 110.0.5481.178

Bcz if somebody steals your laptop or use you will blame google for loosing credit card information or the other guy stealing your money. If you dont care about your card You could go to Chrome settings> autofill> payment details and disable windows hello.

My question is: why would people want to store such important data (autofill) on their devices. Even if it's encrypted. To me, it sounds like an horrible idea.

It's not stored on the device. The device just contains a key that can unlock the crypto store that is on the computer.

Basically 3rd party apps can use Windows Hello for authentication now so some do, it's usually configurable in the app. The key would have been linked in Windows Hello settings, check those.

I have the same issue!

I have never owned any physical security key, but oddly Windows 11 suddenly thinks I've set one up?

I'd love to remove it by using my password, facial recognition, or other 2 factor authentication... But I cant?...

There is only a manage option, which prompts you to put in the physical security key device so you can THEN disable the option. But I don't own anything of the sort?... How fix?...

Thank you anyone for your assistance.

@KirasNote, I couldn't find a fix, ended up uninstalling Chrome then reinstalling it. I reset my computer quite often since I have everything cloud-sync'd. So, I can't remember if I had to reinstall Windows to fix this issue or not.
