With a 3070?

My vote is a new platform. If that's not an option, go with the 1270 V3 assuming your board supports it.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

The Xeon E3-1270 v3 is basically an i7-4770 but without the iGPU. The i7-4790 is clocked 100MHz higher but I doubt that makes much of a difference.

Neither of them are great for a RTX 3070

I'd return the 3070 if you can.

Downgrade to a Rx 6600.

First off, AMD driver overhead is less than Nvidia.

Second, you're gonna be CPU limited even with a Rx 6600.

I have been running a E3 1280V3 for three years now. I can tell you that it was an amazing upgrade from the i5 4440 I had before, but compared to even a first gen Ryzen 5, it falls far behind.

The 4c8t parts are sufficient for 1080p 60ha gaming. If you step up to 1440p, or 120+hz, you're going to really want something more modern. For rendering, it's about a 80-90% performance boost, but going from a E3 1280V3 to a Ryzen 9 3900XT, I saw a 450% uplift in performance.

I very much suggest you get a Ryzen 3000 or 10th gen or newer.

Honestly get witch ever is cheaper the difference between them is marginal at best. Do keep in mind that Xeon might not be supported by your current Bios. So upgrade it.

I honestly don't see why you should give up on the 3070. Keep the GPU. And squeeze more life out of that Haswell 😄 You can always try to get something else down the road when you have money for new ram+mb+cpu. As anything higher then a Gen 4/5 CPU will req new ram as well. Also you might need a cooler for your CPU depending on what you have now.

Just keep in mind that the Xeons are locked down. There is zero oc and zero extending the boost timers. Very performant at stock, but that's all they'll give you, whereas the 4770K can be OCed a bit for more life. A 4770 non-k is more or less going to be identical to the Xeon, except the Xeon has no iGPU. Either the iGPU in my i5 was defective, or my motherboard isn't capable of running the iGPU anyway, so I lost nothing when I upgraded from an i5 4440 to a Xeon, but if you require an iGPU, the Xeon is a no go for you.
