i3 12100 DDR4 RAM Speeds

I’m going to buy ram but I have an i3 12100. It says it only supports a max of 3200mhz for ddr4 ram. Does that mean I cannot overclock the ram or use any with a higher frequency and have it actually run at said frequency?

That means 3200mhz is the upper limit, period. Unlike older chips you can't overclock the northbridge memory controller, so you're stuck at 3200mhz. Still though, 3200mhz is quite fast.

Ok thank you! I get a lot of mixed ideas of what is good as Linus himself in one instance comments saying it’s only so fast and other times he’s saying it’s plenty.
