Which GPU doesn't make sense getting?

reigartj11

Hey guys, Linus mentions in a few videos that there's a GPU that doesn't make sense to get. I don't remember which one it was. I'm pretty sure it's a 30 series though.

Probably any bottom teir GPU like a GT710, GT1030, etc. The only purpose those kinds of cards serve is making a trash find office PC run Minecraft and Roblox for $30. Other than dirt poor preteens, there's no audience. And the cards are only good for said reason after they depreciate and become so cheap.

4070Ti, 4080, 7900XT. They're all dogshit values.

If you're going to get a 4070Ti, you're just a complete idiot.

If you're going to get a 4080, why not spend a couple hundo more and just get the 4090, you can afford it.

If you're going to get a 7900XT, why wouldn't you spend $100 more and get the XTX?

For everyone else, the 6800XT and 6950XT's are the best bang-for-buck cards right now, and if you can't swing those, the 6650XT is the best midrange card.

For low-end, 5700XT. You can find them for $200 and below, and they're as fast as a 3060.

The 3050 and 3060's are waaaay too expensive for what they are. Especially that 3050..

Used GPUs? Steer clear of RTX30 or RX6, with a burning hate. RX5 or RTX20 might be reliable but... thats a bit old, but still good stuff

New stuff? Would not condemn 4070Ti into oblivion but not a smart choice. Also, would not condemn 7900XT to oblivion, 20GB is still 20GB. But custom cards need to be at or below MSRP tho to make sense

4080 again, only if its on sale and under 1000

4090... if you want to invest heavy into supporting stuff (read PSU)...and hope to god your cables are good.

I almost got that during the shortage and just went 5600g temporarily.  That machine has a 3060 12GB in it now.

I think the "why not" argument is somewhat stupid since in theory why not just get a RTX 4090 every time.  Yeah if you are considering a RX 7900 XT "just" pay $100 more for the RX 7900 XTX which is impossible to find and if you can get a 7900 XTX why not pay $200 more and get the RTX 4080, and if you can afford that why not just get the $400+ more RTX 4090

At a certain point just get whatever is available, is in budget, and makes sense for your needs.  Yes this gen "value" wise is complete shit but that's not too much of a surprise.  If I hadn't gotten an AIB RTX 4090 at launch I probably just would have went with a RTX 4080 FE, yeah value wise it sucks but it's still a very good 4K card that at bare min would still get 60 FPS still in the most demanding games like Cyber Punk 2077.  The one area where the 4090 dominates everyone is Ray Tracing but you got to ask yourself does that matter to you?

I'm sorry, why?  This make no sense, the 3080s are about $250 cheaper than new if bought used on eBay in the US.  3060s are also about $100 cheaper used than new, and 6700xts are about $70 cheaper used than new.  Winning an unwatched auction get get you an even bigger discount.  Not to mention most of these cards have barely been used as they are not very old, so they're about as good a used deal as you'll find.

What on earth could you have meant by this post?

Its not a secret majority of RTX30 series went to miners. And miners are trying to "refurbish" units to look less used.

Not to mention the whole "Moisturegate" of RX6 series. Even tho it was a small sample size, its a sign of improper storage or use.

Im not saying all of them are bad. But everyone needs to be way more vigilant about it.

So don't buy anything claiming to be new.  Mining cards are usually in better shape than gaming ones as they are run at lower temps and voltages, with less power variation in usage.

This is an incredibly small sample, and no one buying a GPU on US eBay is gonna get one of these as selling one of these cards as 'used, working' is gonna result in buyer protection kicking in and costing the seller a negative rating and having to pay for postage twice to make no money.
