How can I tell what's eating up almost 16GB of ram? (Basically at idle) Seems like a lot?

I have 64GB of DDR5 6000 Ram, and I just noticed 17 GB is being used. Seems like a lot? I look at my processes and there's really not a whole lot going on here.

That's a ton of junk you have running in the background, try getting rid of some of that. Also windows caches stuff in memory so thats probably part of it as well.

Edit: windows caching is probably the main reason actually.

It's a brand new install, there can't be that much running in the background. Should I take action? Or not worry about it since I have 64gb to use

Maybe 😏 some naughty malware from those torrents 😂

Ryzen 5800X3D(Because who doesn't like a phat stack of cache?) GPU - 7700Xt

                                                           X470 Strix f gaming, 32GB Corsair vengeance, WD Blue 500GB NVME-WD Blue2TB HDD, 700watts EVGA Br

~Extra L3 cache is exciting, every time you load up a new game or program you never know what your going to get, will it perform like a 5700x or are we beating the 14900k today? 😅~

Its windows caching for the most part, you can disable it but its not recommended or necessary as it will decrease performance.

Although your background programs are still part of it, you shouldnt have things using 1gb+ memory at idle.

It should look closer to this (screenshot of my task manager):

Personally, I've caught more malware and viruses trying to come in from approved Microsoft applications than through torrented downloads.

How can I stop background processes that I'm not using?

some basic ones i know:

-go to task manager> startup apps> disable things you dont use (ideally everything in that list)

-find background apps in settings and disable that

-go to google chrome> settings> system> and disable "continue running background apps when chrome is closed", its also something similar with discord

-find a way to disable that qbittorrent program from running in the background

edit: restart your pc when you are done

Is there an issue? You have 64GB RAM, you have a lot open/ running yet you still have 48GB available (most used for caching and can be freed up for other processes when needed), why have so much RAM if you expect most of it to remain unused at all?

The more RAM you have installed the more Windows will grab for caching until other processes need it, that is how memory management works.

Beyond the the crap you have running the background, that looks completely normal for a system with 64GB of RAM and if you try to "fix" it by adjusting how Windows handles memory management, you'll just end up causing more harm than good.

There is no issue here.

There's no issue, software, apps, services, etc like to eat up more memory to allow for breathing room. It's how windows memory management works, when a software or task truly need more RAM, those apps would release the capacity they seized.

Yeah, that is pretty normal especially with Chrome open.  If I really push it including 200 tabs, Edge, Firefox and leaving LightRoom/Photoshop open I can hit about 48GB.  It is only a problem once you run out (which I had seen 2-3 times when I had 32GB)...
