This is nothing new. AMD CPU's use more wattage so that equals more heat. Minus the X79 platform :P

More wattage =\= more heat. More nm = more heat. Intel: 22nm, AMD: 36nm.

In Top Gear maths, Intel is James May. More refined, dignified. A cultured gentleman who values efficiency.

By contrast, AMD is Clarkson.  Have a problem? MORE POWER CORES!

is this a apple to oranges comparison?

why not test the 8350 vs 4670k since they are closer in price to performance. each having their own benefits.

I would have liked to see the idle comparisons.

95% of my use case is spent with my cpu at 1- 10% load, basically idle.

No thats wrong...

The size decrease of CPU architecture is not what causes more heat. It is the fact that you can fit more circuitry with the smaller architecture, resulting in CPUs that are the same size, yet with more transistors crammed inside. The more wattage=more heat if efficiency stays the same. AMD CPUs are MUCH less power efficient then Intel. So a CPU from AMD that has 100W tdp (for example), will perform worse than an intel CPU with 100W tdp because for AMD a lot of power is lost to excess heat rather than being converted into processes.
