I might be experienced, but I'm human and I do make mistakes. Expand for common PC building advice, a short bio and a list of my components and other tech. I edit my messages after sending them alot, please refresh before posting your reply. Please try to be clear and specific, you'll get a better answer. Please remember to mark solutions once you have the information you need.

 

Common build advice: 1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

I'm a PhD student working in the fields of reinforcement learning and traffic control. PCs are one of my hobbies and I've built many PCs and performed upgrades on a few laptops (for myself, friends and family). My personal computers include 3 windows (10/11) machines and a TrueNAS server (and I'm looking to move to dual booting Linux Mint on my main machine in future). Hardly anyone ever uses DVD/Blu-Ray drives anymore and solid-state drives have started to dominate the market due to lower prices and are competitive with 3.5" HDDs.

I imagine what's with it is that companies don't make cases with features few people are likely to use because then those cases don't get bought and no money is made.

 

5.25" optical is a hair's breadth away from joining floppy discs in total obsolete irrelevance, the last case I used that had a 5.25" bay I put a storage drawer in it and got infinitely more use out of that than I ever would have from an optical drive. 

 

Speaking of 3.5", by "external 3.5" I have to assume you mean externally accessible bays for 3.5" HDD's so they can be "swapped" without opening the chassis and not bays for floppies... right? That was a niche use case even in the days when 3.5" HDD's were all there was. Most people then or now simply don't have the need to swap drives in and out that often.

 

If you don't actually mean external 3.5" bays and external was only supposed to modify 5.25" in that sentence, then I would suggest  something from Phanteks' Enthoo line, where the bigger ones still have up to three 5.25" bays and space for ~6 3.5" HDD's. 

 

If you explain exactly what you're trying to do someone may be able to suggest a combination of case and accessories that you can get by with.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

A very few cases with three 5.25" bays still exist, I mentioned some in my post above, if you are determined to use the iStar rack for 3.5" drives.

 

The external 3.5" bay dock for a pair of 2.5" SSD's, you're just gonna have to let that one go. I don't think we seriously need to explain why nobody is selling cases with floppy drive bays in Anno Domini 2022? Many, many USB to SATA docks for 2.5" and 3.5" drives exist if you have a real need to be able to swap drives. If not, then modern cases have places to stick 2.5" SSD's you probably can't even imagine if you're used to cases from the floppy disc era. 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. It's not a firm requirement to use the hot swap devices. Thanks again for the advice.

If you just want lots of room for 3.5" HDD's, there are still good options out there. You can get over a dozen in the Fractal Define 7 XL, for example. I wouldn't restrict your choice of cases based on compatibility with old accessories.

It ain't pretty... but it fits the bill. 

 

I honestly would look on the used market if you need 5.25" bays and lots of 3.5" internal bays. Something like the Antec 300 would be absolutely perfect. I have one and you can fit 6 HDDs and 3 5.25" devices. Plus tons of airflow for those HDDs with the 2x 120mm fan mounts at the front.

Besides some fractal design cases,The rest on the market no longer have a 5.25 bay on them let alone the old floppy 3.5.
