7900xt fresh out the box, first time booting up my computer and it had an odd smell to it. Kind of like burning. Which is a huge concern. I shut off the computer and smelled around but couldn’t find the source of it. The graphics card smells fine and so does my psu, what was the cause and can I plug it back in? Note that my computer didn’t power off itself and was still displaying picture, I turned it off due to concern. There is no sign of any damage, everything on my psu, psu cables, gpu, and motherboard are completely fine visually.

Are any connections loose? Did you check that?

well what gpu did you have before?

what exact psu do you have?

and just to be clear with the little info we have i would strongly advise against using this card, maybe you could try a different gpu with lower power requirements?

  • 5 months later...

I have PC in another room. I had problems PC shutting off and booting itself in mid-game Warzone for 2 hours. Then I went to check on PC.
Had the same burning smell. When I checked PSU cables connecting to XFX 7900 xt, one of the pins was burned. was easy to see as I have red pins in PSU.
Now I connected alternative PSU and GPU is working. Now waiting what happens.

Is it possible for GPU to burn a PSU-pin connected to it, if the connection is little loose, as maybe suggested above?

Electronics has a pretty distinctive "burning" smell. It may be a bit late to ask this, but without visual aid, its the only way of guessing anything.
