PC Suddenly Slow

N3stS

Hi!

I recently upgraded my PC from a GTX 1060 to a RTX 3060 in order to get better FPS. Before switching cards I made a factory reset to wipe my files from the computer(storage was so full that it had an effect on performance). I redownloaded the newest versions of all drivers and slightly overclocked the processor to squeeze some more performance out of it. The issue is that the PC now is slower than what it was before. It stutters more and gives less FPS. I tried switching back to my old GPU to see if it was because of the new GPU being incompatible with my motherboard, but it is still slower than it was before the reset. I have tried most helpguides that I could find but nothing really helped. I would be very appreciative to any and all help with making my PC run as smooth as it used to.

My specs:

MSI Z270 Gaming Pro
Intel Core i7-7700K
Corsair 16GB(8x2) 3000MHz
Bitfenix Whisper M 750W
MSI GeForce RTX 3060 12GB Gaming X

When you say slower, how are you measuring this?  Less fps?  By how much?

Did you get all the drivers from the motherboard site, GPU, as well?  Did the resolution or ANY setting change?  Some games auto setting based on system.

By slower I mean that it is struggling to open any and all programs(stuttering, long buffering), as well as much lower fps. I used to be able to play most games at 60+ fps, just for troubleshooting I have been using Rocket League as I know the PC used to push out at least 80 fps at highest settings. Now it is usually around 30 with drops down to 16 and highs at only 45.

Now that you reminded me I haven't downloaded any drivers for my motherboard. I looked them up and got really confused about what to download and what not to. Should I just get the latest driver? Do I need to flash my BIOS? Would any of the utilities help?

Thanks for your previous response 🙂

For the most part you only need the Intel chipset driver and the Intel management engine, also recommand to get the latest GPU driver from NVIDIAs website.

After that you can right click on my computer, click properties and on the top right you find the device manager it, will tell you if anything is still missing.

EDIT.: Also you get a performance improvement if you can get a BIOS update with resizable bar but I don't think that's even possioble with a 7700k but I'm shure someone can give you an answer to that question.

Looks like Live Update 6 should handle it all if it does what I think it does.  I should handle all the driver updating, similar how Gigabyte Control Center does.

If not though, you want the chipset drivers.  The rest seem to be Quality of Life stuff that doesn't look to improve performance.

Have you checked the temps on your system, you can use HWMonitor to capture the temps and fan speeds of your GPU and CPU.

Have you tried restarting it?

So, I just did a benchmark with the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to see how the CPU did and I started with being locked at 0,80 GHz to then drop to -4,20 GHz. Am I reading the results wrong or what is happening?

Ignore that for now.  How are games playing?

Games are playing at really low fps still. I did the Live Update thing and downloaded all drivers, but my test with Rocket League is between 15-30 fps. Thinking it might have something with my internet to do(since I had about 170 in ping at that time) I tried an offline game and that game only put out around 20 steady fps.

I'm no expert on overclocking... but I don't think that's supposed to happen.

Remove any and all OC/UC.

So I just removed all OC and the max frequency was at 4,20GHz for like 30 seconds and then dropped back to 0,80GHz. So it was a step in the right direction for a short moment.

Could it be that my PC somehow thinks that the CPU gets overheated and decreases the frequency as a safety-measure? I tried looking around and most issues was that the OP's PC didn't have enough cooling. But that has never been an issue for me before. My fans has run on around 50-60% under relatively high load.

Somehow it seems like all problems went away when I let my PC stay in sleep mode for a whole day. Thank you all for the help that you were able to give me. Now my CPU runs smoothly at it's baseclock speed.

No, this would be like a more serious "Green" feature built into Bios.

But this is a 7th Gen. Intel and doesn't have the Eco+ Cores.

Try turning cores manually on, all of them, instead of sitting on Auto, in Bios.

What effect would that give? They are already working at 4,20GHz and I can run games without issue.

How would one go about that? Most guides points me towards msconfig->BOOT Advanced Options and then unchecking "number of processors". But that doesnt seem to help.

Not in WIndows, in Bios. And while there, turn off any and all recognized "green" & "eco" features.
