What happens when you GPU delivers more frames then your monitor can handle?

It's been a while since I visited this subject but iirc, It's not a bad thing if your over producing frames past what your monitor supports right? Pretty sure this is an obvious question, but, I just want some extra clarification.

It isn't a bad thing if your graphics card is pushing frames faster than what your monitor can support, although you'll probably be able to see it through screen tearing. That's why things like vsync were made, so that the graphics card sends frames at the same rate the monitor can display them.

The motion will look less fluid because you either skipping frames or cause some tearing.

It's actually a good thing in some ways/games, Linus did a test with some Twitch streamers about resolution vs fps.  I'll see if I can find it.

I have seen that, Although, I think that was more in line to prove the point that high FPS doesn't always matter.

I had a 100Hz display for a number of years and it really just came down to the game if tearing was bad or not above 100fps. It was also a GSync display so the majority of the time I was capping my frames at 98fps to stay within the GSync range.

In CS:GO, the higher your FPS the less input latency you'll get. Not all game behave like that iirc.

You might see some screen tearing, where there seems to be a split where things move because part of the screen shows one frame and the other part shows the next frame. It's usually quick enough that you don't notice unless you're looking for it.
