2016 used hard drive reusable?

Jade Roxy

Some things to note. My old rig has now officially died as even the cpu does not post a janky screen(3700k). Anywho, my plans were to use the old rig to move any important files and the NUKE the drive afterwards. Now that the old rig(2013 hardware) has kicked the bucket, I wasn’t able to recover and then nuke the drive(just tried a few minutes ago). Is it still safe to plug it into relatively recent hardware?

New rig

Ryzen 5 5600

Red Devil 6600xt

ASRock B550M Steel Legend

DDR4 3200Mhz 2x8

1TB Adata Legend 840(clean)

RM850x

Old rig

3700k

R7 290(unsure, but it’s a gpu from 2013)

Unknown Mobo

DDR3 4x16

4TB HGST(has files and OS)

My plans for the old hard drive was to essentially reuse it as it has a lot of storage, even though it’s slow. It’s somewhat reliable, other than speeds, and I haven’t seen any storage issues, again speed. Initially it was NVME as boot and games, 4TB to throw random files at it.

I’ve heard that moving a hard drive straight from an old rig to a relatively new one is a bad idea. So my question is whether I should consider it, or if the risks outweigh the benefits and I should scour for a fresh cheap 4TB hard drive.

btw the files don’t really matter, there were some really specific settings on minecraft i would rather keep, but i wouldn’t want to brick my new rig over some settings i could just frankenstein the settings back to the new rig

I'd wipe it if you want to reuse it, since it was used as an OS.

If it didn't have Windows files and it was just mass storage I'd just plug it in and use it.

Is it alright to plug it into the new rig and then wipe, or does it have to be wiped beforehand?
