Is my HDD dead?

Hi!

 

I have this external drive, a 500GB one from Toshiba from 2006. I have it plugged in to my NAS but because I don't use the data much I just turn it off, it also hasn't been moved violentlly or anything like that. Today I turn it on to copy some files and my NAS didn't mount it. I thought it was wierd so I check the drive and insted of spinning the hard drive is clicking a bit like a clock. Is it dead? I kinda find it wierd because like 3-2 weeks ago I plugged it in  and it worked fine and it has been off since and I didn't even touch it.

 

Do you have any idea as to what I can do?

Sounds like the spindes don't want to move or something, and the head is trying to seek data. It's probably dead.

Try putting it back in its original case maybe.

No, I turn it on and it makes a sound like it's stuck. It is in the original case.

If you can pop it into a desktop and see if you can get it to power up (assuming it's SATA) then it might not be getting enough power. That happened to me with an old 20GB IDE drive from a laptop.

I plan on doing that this afternoon. Well, thank god I uploaded it all to Google Play Music!

That is probably a really good thing.

I'll try to put it in my computer and see if it works, if it doesn't I'll try that.

You can try running on its side or upside down. Another method is putting in a zip lock bag and freezing it over night but method doesn't work since you can't maintain the chill on the hdd.

I put it in my computer and it worked! Thanks @tmcclelland455! I don't get it, the HDD didn't work in the enclosure, I put it in my PC and it works, then to see if it was really the enclosure's fault I put the HDD with my OS in it and it works... Whatever, at least I didn't loose any data, though I am backing it up.
