Is HP EliteDesk 705 G2 worth buying for server use?

Go to solution Solved by mariushm,

You can run a minecraft server... but won't run great, especially if you add lots of plugins...   you can run a small web server , you can do lots of things ... but you can't put lots of drives in it, you can't do real time conversion of videos or real time transcoding (ex you want to stream a video to your phone but don't want to stream the full hd rip of a bluray)

It's not upgradable, it's low performance for the money... it's not a good deal.

I just found someone selling several units of this device(Facebook Marketplace). I don't have budget to do a server from scratch. I want to know will this suffice as a personal server.

I'm going to use as NAS, vpn, plex, maybe smarthome at some point. But something I'm definitely consider doing is a minecraft server for my friends for max 4ppl?(in bold more important)

Sadly i don't have any knowledge on servers so I'm here seeking yours.🙂🤝

The price in dollars is around 40! (400swedish

kr)

Not if it's those specs.  It's socket FM2+  , with a weak cpu (yeah, the i5-2400 comparison is reasonable, but that's slow ... half of even the oldest Ryzen 1200 )

They will also have proprietary power supply, in the 200-300w range.. I think these come with 200w psu... see https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1217955-REG/hp_p5v57ut_aba_elitedesk_705_g2_small.html

So it's not like you'd be able to put more than a couple drives in it, or do anything super cpu intensive.

So it's not powerful enough for any of the things I want to do? If not, Would it be good for just learning purposes?! Because I wanted to install Linux on it...

Appreciate the opinion. thanks bro.
