Will AM4 CPUs still be relevant in 5 years?

Building a system featuring Ryzen 5 3600XT. I don't know how much longer this 3000 series CPU will be relevant, if not very relevant, should I upgrade to a 11700K?

So instead of building a system with an upgrade path to a used 5000 series CPU in the future you want to jump to the 11700K which has an upgrade path of the 11900K space heater and nothing more?

If you do that you'll have to buy an entirely new system - Why not just upgrade to a newer Ryzen chip and still be able to use your current board and RAM?

I believe they'll be OK overall but like anything else related, nothing lasts forever in the world of computing.

You can get up to a 5950X, which is pretty powerful with 16 cores up to near 5GHz

Even in 5 years it'll still be a midrange chip, I suppose by that time the 15400 and 9600X will have like 12 cores and run at 6GHz 🙂 , so you'll still get as much power in multicore loads, but a tad slow single core perf.. Not necessarily a big issue playing 8K on a 6090SuperTi 😄

The top-of-range chips (stuff like the 5800X3D and the 5950X) will be somewhat relevant.

Chips like the 3600XT, honestly, no.

LGA 1200 platform won't really be in any better position.

Should be. I've been using 5+ year old chips so far, haven't had issues. Seems anything with 6c/12t or more + good IPC will last a damn while unless we suddenly switch up how we use CPUs in a major way.

I can't afford LGA1700 CPUs, and I also can't afford DDR5. I can't afford LGA1700 motherboards that doesn't look like something resembling an H610M. LGA1200 has great used motherboard prices and great performance for money.

No way of knowing.  Who would have thought the 8700k and 9900k would hold their own so well still?

Unless someone has insider info at Intel or AMD and their product paths... we can't know what 5 years brings to CPUs.

I'm just giving you my honest opinion. Your budget doesn't change the facts.

11th-gen Intel is basically neck and neck with Zen 3 (Ryzen 5000-series) in performance. An 11700 would be a better performer than a 3600 XT right now, but in terms of upgrade path and relevancy 5 years from now, they'll probably be very little to choose between AM4 and LGA 1200. The maximum potential is about the same, getting an 11700 now just puts you closer to that potential.

Would not buy 11th gen or older, or AM4 at this point. 5800X3D is only worth it if you already have an AM4 board.

Would not consider buying 11th gen if you are on an LGA1200 board.

13600K, 13700k, 7700x, or 7950x are the only chips right now i'd build a new system around.

Socket AM4 in 5 years will be as relevant as AM3 and FM1/2 are today. Never mind anything Intel put out in those years :old-eyeroll:

As for your budget: buy what you can today, don't bother waiting for the next best thing (c) as that'll forever be just around the corner. 🙃

FM2 wasn't even relevant while it was out, so I think this is an exaggeration.

AM4 CPU's have, at various points, been some of the best chips on the market. FM2(+) CPU's were dogshit not worth buying from the word go.

No different than what a 5-year-old chip compared to a modern one today I suppose.

Huh I misunderstood and thought you had a 3600XT from long ago and wanted to upgrade!! Was a really bad idea to get one used for more than a new 5600X...

So well you're making a 3 years old midrange systemnow, in 5 years it'll certainly be super low range

And you won't fit a 5950X on a H610 board, I mean it'll fit but the board will not keep up at all with the chip, so again you've cornered yourself in a dead end, sorry

A 11700K is barely better, at least it has 8 cores though, but again not worth buying one used now given a new 12400 is no more expensive and better...

Clock speed is only part of the equation. Ryzen 5000 saw a significant IPC (instructions per clock) increase, so even at slightly lower clocks the 5600 outperforms the 3600xt easily.
Sucks that you got taken advantage of.

5 years ago the best consumer chips were the Skylake/Kaby Lake i7's and those are just barely hanging on to the cliff edge while anything weaker/earlier is basically junk. So yeah, sounds about right.
