Have PG279Q but NEED better blacks, recommendation?

farmfowls

I have a PG279Q but am wanting a monitor with noticeably better blacks with as little tradeoff from the PG279Q as possible? Does anyone have any recommendations and what would I be compromising on?

Did you want to list any other aspects like size or budget or refresh rate or did you want us to just list every oled monitor ever made.

VA or OLED is your best bet. QD OLED if you want to be an early adopter. Dell makes some good VA 1440p high refresh rate monitors.

Do you want me to list all of the specs of the PG279Q for you in an itemized list so you know what to compare? Spare the sarcasm please.

Thank you! Are there many issues running OLED's or QDOLED's as a daily driver?

Hide taskbar, full screen everything, black background. If gaming a lot you won't have an issue. My LG C1 has 1900 hours, mixed gaming, sports watching, movies, etc. No issues at all. But I don't use it as a monitor. Can't comment on QD OLED because its so new and I don't own one. Waiting a few years personally to go OLED/QD OLED on my monitor. VA has good enough blacks for me.

Yeah so you're saying if this was a daily driver and something I would use for work (I work remote), I'd be better off choosing a OLED/QD OLED? So either a VA panel or a just upgrading to a PG279QM (wouldn't help with blacks I guess)?

For better black. Suggest go for 1000+ local dimming zone mini-LED in VA or OLED/QD-OLED.

Cons of mini-LED - slightly blooming issue surrounding the mouse cursor when local dimming is on for productivty. May need to on and off the Local Dimming depends on usage.

Cons of OLED/QD-OLED - possibility of burn-in issue, very obvious brightness changes when big/full screen windows apps in white/bright colour, and also slightly less clarity in text due to not RGB pixel alignment.

What are the current top monitors in the 1000+ local dimming zone mini-LED VA and OLED/QD-OLED categories?

I have the same monitor the PG279Q

I upgraded to the Gigabyte M32U 4K

But first i had to decide if to buy the newer model which is the PG279QM or the M32U

So i ended buying the gigabyte

Because upgrading from 1440p to 1440p

Which is the QM is only better in speed and higher refresh rate but you wont see big difference in picture quality but going to 4K

Way a better option for me

The only reason i replaced my pg279q

Because it had so many dead pixels and black light bleed at the corner but in terms of quality the PG279Q is still a good monitor

Until now

If it's a case of keeping two monitors vs retiring one and choosing another - do you think you'd pair the PG279QM with the PG279Q in that case? Or would you still go 4k, Ultrawide or VA? I have a 3080 Ti FTW3 (purchased a few months ago when my 1080 Ti failed), and have stayed away from 4k as I don't want to be constantly upgrading my GPU and want most games to run at higher refresh rates anyways for the next few years. Don't want to really approach 60fps in games if I can help it.

Although I am a visual nut and still haven't experienced 4k, Ultrawide, Curved or HDR etc so I know I'm missing out BUT haven't really experienced what I am missing out on yet. I work from home as well and dual monitor would be pretty useful right now for the extra screen real estate (even though my current PG279Q has some visual issues like a few bits of something inside the screen near the top-middle, some feint lighter lines near the bottom etc etc). Not dead by any means but somewhat annoying as my main. If I went with the PG279QM, it'd be my new main monitor and the older PG279Q would be used for more productivity and extra screen space for work and maybe keeping a browser or something open while I game on the PG279QM.

I really want better blacks of course, but haven't used a VA panel before - certainly not OLED or QDOLED, never tried dual monitor yet surprisingly and do think my next monitor after this purchase would be either an Ultrawide or something similar to performance of the PG279Q/PG279QM with better blacks or colours. I mean maybe 4k but I'm still on the fence for that. If my work situation was more clear - maybe I'd give myself the room but as of now I'm not sure. I did really consider the AW3423DW too but as a daily driver and as a work main monitor - I'm not sure how much a problem burn in would be.

i this situation i would pair the PG279Q with the PG279QM like you said for higher fps than 4K

and the 3080ti you have will give you more fps at 1440p than 4k monitor

and you can use the QM as main monitor

but keep in mind both Asus monitors the black appear more like gray

so if you want really black get a 4k Gigabyte M32U or Samsung Odyssey G7 Neo

like  said before in this post they recommended for you the Samsung VA panel because

black is better or even better the G8 NEO

but the Gigabyte M32U is a good upgrade for the PG279Q

its better in everyway

Thank you so much for your insight! I've actually stayed away from Freesync and have only really payed attention to Gysnc and Gsync Ultimate monitors (not Gysnc compatible). This could just be from a lack of knowledge on if it makes that big of a difference though. Have run the PG279Q with Gysnc for years now so if I didn't have specifically Gysnc or Gsync Ultimate - I'm not sure if I'd notice and if I'd be losing anything from the experience. What would you think?

Gysnc and Gsync Ultimate monitors (not Gysnc compatible).

The differences of G-Sync Ultimate is they give you no tearing from 1fps to the maximum of the monitor refresh rate while G-Sync Compatible is from around 40fps to the maximum of the monitor refresh rate.

Even though G-Sync Ultimate give you as low as from 39fps to 1fps no tearing but that kind of fps is not playable. But instead they add up a lot of money on it. That the reason they is less and less monitor release with it and most people also no longer care anymore since appear of G-Sync Compatible.

Also G-Sync Compatible monitor is fully supported AMD GPU which running Freesync, but this is not the case for G-Sync Ultimate monitor.

What does normal Gsync cover? The same 1fps as G-Sync Ultimate?

So there isn't a real reason to look for Gsync monitors then? I mean if Compatible only covers under 40fps - it wouldn't really be worth it anyway.

Are Freesync monitors worth it and what would the experience be having an Nvidia GPU?

They is no thing call normal G-Sync. The normal one is G-Sync Compatible.

All new monitor with G-Sync Compatible is also a Freesync monitor as both it compatible now.

If the monitor only label Freesync means they is no check by Nvidia for G-Sync Compatible but it is still work just not guarantee work from Nvidia.

IMO, absolutely no reason to spend extra cost for G-Sync Ultimate.

I thought there were three types of Gsync?:

1) G-Sync

2) G-Sync Ultimate

3) G-Sync Compatible

Isn't G-Sync Compatible just uncertified G-Sync and G-Sync certified?

And would there be any issue using Curved monitors for working at home or productivity?

Depends on user, some said curve give distortion. I don't have issue on curve screen and I love curve screen on Ultrawide and Super Ultrawide but normal Wide I prefer none curve.

I have an opportunity internally through my work to get a Refurbished AW3423DW for much less than MSRP. Still a little bit more expensive than a new PG279QM but not MSRP. Not really sure if I should pull the trigger as it is refurbished and I would be using it as my main daily driver for working from home and gaming. I'd have 30 days as is normal for returning it for any reason. Do you think this would be a good idea? Or should I pass it up for now?
