How much differrence does faster RAM make for FPS on a Ryzen 9 3900X?

I currently have a 3900X Installed, and I think my CPU is underperforming a bit in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and I wanted to ask if getting faster RAM (like 3600mhz) would make a big difference, and if so, what should I look for when getting new RAM?

I have also attached a Screenshot of my current RAM, if that helps

2400 cl15 bin ram?

2x8, 4x8, or 4x4?

Check thaiphoon burner for ram ic, most rams will oc to atleast 3200 even garbage hynix 8gbit mfr

Could you take a thaiphoon burner screenshot?

All ics are different so a one size fits all guide is not ideal

Yes, faster RAM would help. If your memory bandwith is an issue. And that would be if your GPU is strong enough to be bottlenecked by a 3900X not performing the best it could.
For example, with an RTX 3090 on 1080p.

Edit: I just noticed I am a bit of an Idiot, the 1600mhz are also displayed in HWInof, just a bit higher up

I tried OCing my RAM with the settings from DRAM Calculator, and now CPUZ displays the new Frequency, but in HWInfo there are still the 1200mhz

What ic do you have actually?

3200 cl18 is pretty horrible so i assume youve got garbage 8gbit mfr

Hwinfo also shows the new speed, you are just looking at the spd table, look at the box beside whatever the hell takt means and i assume thats the actual ram freq

it's already running at 3200, timings are a bit weird, but ocing it to 3600 will only net u 5-8% assuming it doesnt cause instability, this definitely isn't a situation i'd buy faster ram for

Thats really really optimistic performance gains for being such a miniscule freq jump with no subtiming optimizations

expect more like 2% even if the 3900x is 2ccd, 5-7% gains are for properly tuned (tightened subtimings) or straight up ludicrous ram oc (4800+), the former is quite doable, but the latter just stay away unless you are fine with being driven insane

If you get a 3600 C16 kit you may see a few % increase in average FPS but the big difference will be how much better the 1% and 0.1% lows are.

3600 C16 kit

Horrible idea

Garbage non bdie 3600 cl16 (16-18-18/19-19) provides no value over 3200 cl16 or 3600 cl18, exact same ics you find on both of those bins just tightened primaries and wayyyy overpriced, gets absolutely nuked by crucial ballistix 3200/bare pcb 2666 of the same/lesser price (4600+ oc capability, 3800 cl15/16 ideal if you dont wanna go insane trying to dial high freq ram)

reason i keep denouncing this crap bin is because primaries really dont matter that much, theyre not as frequently used as the subtimings like trfc, sr dr dd (r/w/act/pre), trrd(-l), or tfaw. This is also the reason why 4000+ bins perform like garbage, subtimings are abysmal to ensure compatibility with even the crappiest of boards

Im just gonna straight up say this, high speed ram is exclusive to overclocking, doesnt even have to be ludicrous freq even a mild 3800 cl16 with decent subtimings will perform alot better than garbage non bdie 3600 cl16

And heres basically c15 vs c21

Spoiler

Diff within margin of error

Ok i really should get around to testing tightened subtimings since i literally just autoed them here, bloody hell gotta wait till next week 😕

Testing i've done in the past to show the difference, GTA V benchmark

OP wants better game performance and a 3600 c16 kit will provide a smoother experience than a 3200 c18 kit. (without tweaks/OC)

Kit i would advise would be Crucials Ballistix.

thats 3000 cl16 vs 3200 cl16

What game?

What cpu?

Thing is some games really care about ram while some dont give a flying crap, so that 5-7% youd get from a proper ram oc only applies to some games and not all

And intel vs ryzen scale differently with ram speeds, iirc ryzen benifits more than intel cause infinity fabric but usually the higher the cache amount the less ram matters (why you basically cant telll the diff with oced vs non oced ram on the 5800x3d)

Ballistix is pretty good but since its basically an oc only kit unless you get some for similar to the cheapest 3200 cl16 available you may aswell just buy 8gb crucial/micron 2666 bare pcbs at <20$ a stick (here in indo theyre like 17$), same oc capabilities (4600+ cl18) just uglier and cheaper, c9bjz seems to be the best ic at 2666 cl19 bin. Still better than being a moron and buying a 3600 garbage non bdie cl16 kit (ballistix 3200 cl16 just set freq at 3600 and volt at 1.4 or something and itll work aka lazy ocing)

its 3200 cl16 or 3600 cl18, any other bins are either oc specific (4000+, bdie bins 3200 cl14 - 4400 cl19 19-19-19) or retard traps (the aformentioned 3600 garbage non bdie cl16), basically why i say fast ram is oc only, you dont oc you dont bother with fast rams

4.65g on a zen2? Gold sample + good cooling, sheer volts, or just both? Apparently 4.5-4.6g is achievable with somewhat questionable 1.45v on zen2

Though what settings for the gta v benchmark?

It is a gold sample yeah, i run 4.6 at 1.375v with a -30mv offset for benching 3Dmark and light threaded loads. On an LF II 360.

It will validate on CPUZ at 4690Mhz at the same voltage.  https://valid.x86.fr/142im0

It's my daily so i'm not going to push it properly until i have an upgrade ready to go.

Can't even remember what GPU i used for the GTA V benchmark nevermind the settings  🤣  Same settings were used for both though.

Thats really good for zen2

Oh well dont have any decent cpu samples yet aside from a golden pentium e5400 (4.5g 1.55v bench stable) and all my c2d e8000 wolfdales are either mid (4.7g 1.55v bench stable /4.4g 1.45v full stable) or flaming garbage (4.2 1.4v full stable), maybe an x5260 will change that but i wont get one now since i dont got much money =p

Not enough to make a huge difference. Zen 2 is pretty slow compared to Zen 3.

It's not too bad, running peak it pretty much halves the gap between zen 2 and 3.

Worth a bit of fiddling i'd say 🙂
