Thunderbolt Dock for M1 Pro that supports Samsung G9 5k 120hz

StErMi

Hi there everyone,

I own a MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and I would like to buy a thunderbolt 4 dock for it.

The big requirement that I have is that I need to support my Samsung Odyssey G9 that has a 5k resolution and 120hz support (well it can go up to 240hz, but I doubt that mac/macOS support it).

I was looking at CalDigit (I saw some review on LTT youtube) but it seems that at least from their marketing specs they do not support 120hz (only 60hz).

The monitor is currently connected directly through a DP-USDC cable, and it seems to support correctly 120hz on macOS.

Could you please suggest me some thunderbolt 4 dock that support these requirements? I don't need something with many input/output like the CalDigit TS4, but the ELEMENT HUB would be more than fine.

@StErMi

from a bit of Googling I found this

There's a good reason for this: Thunderbolt 4 doesn't have enough port bandwidth. TB4 can carry a max of 30Gbps but 5K @ 120hz is 32Gbps. There's no way Apple would do two cables for this, and the next gen of Thunderbolt is a while off, so the choice makes sense.

Other pages where also mentioning with use of a dock that mostly you’ll get capped at 60hz (even at 6k).

There may be some things I have missed - so if anyone else knows otherwise please do let know 🙂

What's strange is that I'm using this DP cable https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B08B3SB5VC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

it says that it support 5k@60hz only but on macOS if I go into the "Display" settings I see that I can set 5k and choose between 60hz, 120hz and Variable (60-120 hz). If I see the options it should mean that the system support 120hz right now right?

You should able to run at 120hz as Odyssey G9 is not a 5K monitor, it is no even reaching 4K pixel count.

5120 x 1440 is only 7.3 MP pixel count but

3840 x 2160 (4K) is 8.2 MP pixel count.

Yes if it shows then.

my comment was I. Relation to using a dock and apparently that’s where some bandwidth restrictions are - but not sure. Directly connected you should get 120hz for sure.

Does it mean that it should support it?

What good alternatives are to the CalDigit Elements hub?

Based on the specification it should support as it mentioned support "4K @ 60Hz / 144Hz / 120Hz" and Samsung Odyssey G9 is not even reach 4K pixel count.

  • 2 months later...

I'm in the same boat. I also have a G9 Neo and 2021 14" Base MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, I have my DP output connected to my main PC with 3080ti. So, I also need a dock/switch that can I change between my MP and my PC. If I use HDMI out with MacBook Pro, I'm limited at 3840x1080 60hz which look awful 😄
