My Xbox one s hdd broke , and I don't have any 2.5 inch drives so i want to see if anyone knows if you can run an Xbox on a external drive

You cannot boot an xbox from an external drive. If it is not a total drive failure, and the os is just corrupted, you can follow the instructions here and us the usb method to try and fix the console.
