Hello boys and girls 🙂

I have 24 inch LG Monitor https://www.lg.com/hk_en/monitor/lg-24MP58VQ-P That is IPS Panel (1080p)

Now my nephew want to upgrade his Monitor so my plan is to get bigger display 27inch or larger and this to give to my nephew.

The monitor that i saw is VA LCD Panel and i dont know is this UPGRADE or DOWNGRADE for display

The Monitor is Philips 27inch https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/278E8QJAB_00/curved-lcd-monitor-with-ultra-wide-color

Now question is. Do i take this Monitor, i use PC mostly for watching Movies or TV Show. And somethimes i play games.

IS VA LCD good as IPS or worst for watching movies,tv show or YouTube?

I mean considering its a 1080p panel its already a severe downgrade for sharpness and gonna be a mess with jagged edges in game. 27 inch really needs a higher resolution.

As for color reproduction and such its not good but not worse than what you have now

For 27", you should pick 2560x1440.

In this case, this 27" is a downgrade.

Curved is (almost) always VA, unless you're looking at 35" or greater. IPS is very expensive to manufacture curved, so it only gets used on big displays where the price is justified. But why would VA be a downgrade? It comes down to the panel, most VA panels have much better contrast than IPS panels, and some VA panels also better pixel response times.

It is downgrade as 27" in 1080p is only 81 PPI, any display below 90 PPI will give you pixelate output with blur text. The best is at least 100 PPI and above.

For 24" in 1080p at least it still got 91 PPI and it still look ok.

But a 27" 1080p IPS would have exactly the same PPI, it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it's a VA panel.

But the user also asking that monitor which is 27" vs 24" where both in 1080p. In size vs resolution, this is not an upgrade.

if you talk on IPS v/s VA, value VA never good also, it normally have serious black smearing issue and slow respond time.

Beside this, viewing angle in VA is bad and never can compare with IPS.

In general, VA never good than IPS except latest Samsung Odyssey G7, Neo G7, Neo G8, G9 and Neo G9 which is the only at the moment solve the black smearing issue with very fast respond time, but the viewing angle still bad and cannot compare with IPS.

I have VA and IPS monitors, and the monitor with the worst viewing angles is the IPS, the blacks are just totally washed out when viewing off axis:Video player doesn't work, you need to download the video and view locally 😕

I don't know how reviewers test for "good viewing angles", but in my own experience, VA looks much better off ax

VA viewing angle never look better than IPS.

That video is showing a terrible bleeding IPS monitor, you should request refund.

I own so many monitors and never seen any VA panel can have great viewing angle than IPS. I also never seen any review of IPS had bad viewing angle than VA.

IPS cannot have as black as VA especially view in dark room but this had nothing to do with viewing angle. You use monitor with object not for view full black image.

VA has better contrast than IPS, better blacks, less of the classic "IPS glow"

BUT it's slower, usually, higher latency compared to IPS.

24" is the sweetspot for 1080p , 27" is a bit too much screen for 1080p, has potential to make text a bit ugly, pixelated, unless you apply a bit of scaling. Pixels are 0.2475mm on the 24" , and 0.31 mm , quite bigger, on the Phillips

Also ... with Phillips it kind of varies, on the cheaper / budget end, they use crappier panels, with less color calibration and stuff like that.

I wouldn't buy the 27" VA 1080p Phillips considering all the above. Wouldn't necessarily call it a downgrade, but it's not an upgrade.

If VA is like TN panel then IPS is better choice. This 27inch Philips Monitor is USED (Second Hand) for around 120 Euros near me. My nephew have old 19inch TN panel and he want to get monitor but he does not want to spend too much money.

Our idea was. To get me a little bigger screen 27inch and this 24 inch (LG) for my nephew but I DONT WANT TO HAVE worst experience watching movies on VA panel. I just wanted your opinion about VA or IPS.

IPS is great, it wont lose brightness or color if i watch from side and i see that VA panel have that problem.

VA would have better contrast , deeper blacks ... view angles would be about the same as IPS ... not at all bad like TN.

That particular Phillips claims good colors like 104% ntsc and 130% srgb, so should be good color reproduction.

For watching youtube and movies it would probably be better than your current monitor.

At 120 euro, I'm not sure it's a great deal. That's around 101 pounds .. at 110 pounds you can get LG 24MK430H-B (23.8" IPS 1080p) new : https://www.cclonline.com/24mk430h-b-lg-24mk430h-monitor-23-8-inch-1920-x-1080-full-hd-ips-panel-amd-freesync-75hz-black/

With a used monitor there are some risks (like what if the guy had the monitor with brightness at 100% for 8+ hours each day, ageing the backlight, and it will die on you within 6 months or a year?) and a few euro/pounds off is too little for the risks you're taking.

Or maybe better question is: If someone used VA and IPS, witch is better viewing experience for media?

That depends on the quality of panel as well. Cheap VA panel may have serious black smearing issue (this may impact to dark scenes too dark and lost the details) or slow respond for gaming (no issue for media playback). This you can get the idea how the output by checking ritngs.com review or YouTube Hardware Unboxed channel but Philips is very rare people review it and I will avoid it if it is too cheap.

VA is better black than IPS and it is better for media viewing experience. But VA had much narrow viewing angle than IPS (not that bad as TN which seat center also can notice the viewing is very bad). It is better to seat straight to prevent wash-out issue where start around horizontal viewing angle of 35°

In general for media viewing experience, most Good quality VA is better than IPS due to better contrast and more black output.

I am using Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 now which is came with one of the best VA panel in Mini-LED light and 2000+ Local Dimming, this VA monitor is absolutely far better than my previous LG UltraGear Gaming Monitor 34" 34GN850 IPS panel for media viewing experience or gaming, But I cannot said for cheap VA panel, at least go for middle range and above VA panel that is very little black smearing issue and fast respond time.

Currently only Samsung Odyssey G7, Neo G7, Neo G8, G9 and Neo G9 don't have black smearing issue, but other with little black smearing issue also is good to go and not impact much on viewing experience. Check for review to know how is the quality for each. Majority famous monitor is cover by ritngs.com review or YouTube Hardware Unboxed channel.

That's not entirely true... well, technically anyway. There are IPS with mediocre viewing angle and VA with exceptional viewing angle. If you compared a cheap IPS with so-so vieiwing angle with a premium VA with WVA layer, the latter are definitely going to have a better viewing angle than the former.

Not a practical comparison by any standard, but if some poeple are mostly used to a premium VA with WVA and only briefly touch budget IPS with mediocre viewing angle, it's possible that they will think VA have outstanding viewing performance as a rule.

In general 99% VA panel viewing angle is not better than IPS.

If they is only one better than, are you going to tell everyone VA had better viewing angle than IPS? this is misleading.

This is call "finding bone inside egg". 😅

But to be frank, I got one dirt cheap IPS monitor  LG 24MK600 which only cost around USD $ 140 and it still have a very great color output and viewing angle.
