PC Freezes when Playing game or any GPU Load 3090 ti

I haven't tried it without the riser, it was a thought. BUUUUTTTTT because of the custom loop I do not have room to mount the behemoth of a card that is the 3090ti even in my Phanteks Enthoo Evolv without some serious disassembly of the loop. I am however looking to move away from a custom loop, even though it's best for temps, it's too much of a hassle when it comes to troubleshooting and general upgrades.

I have a feeling that the riser is the issue here.

I know many have had issues with using 3.0 risers with 4.0 GPUs. Most have been able to fix this by forcing the slot to run at 3.0 and not 4.0 in the BIOS.

For some reason 4.0 > 3.0 > 4.0 is not good, but 3.0 > 3.0 > 4.0 is, if I remember correctly. This is easy for you to test though. Give it a try 🙂

PC Specs:

Windows 11 Pro 64bit

CPU: i9 12900k

MB: Gigabyte Aorus z690 Elite AX DDR4 (BIOS F3a)

RAM: 64GB Corsair Vengence RGB Pro 3200 (XMP Enabled)

SSD: 980 pro 1TB

PSU: beQuiet Dark Power 12 1000w.

GPU: Gigabyte Aorus 2080ti Waterforce Extreme / Zotac RTX 3090ti AMP

Custom loop with dual 280mm radiators. Was running the new GPU on air first before buying waterblock (good thing I waited).

Hi all,

Hope to see if anyone knows what else I can do to troubleshoot this before I return one or both products. Did an upgrade from a 2080ti to a 3090ti as well as a PSU upgrade (From a 750w corsair to beQuiet! 1000w). Once I got everything working (initially screen was black after login, did clean driver install with DDU to fix), the first load I put on my new 3090ti caused the whole system to freeze. Rebooted, froze again. Sometimes the PC would restart completely but no video after the reboot (would then have to hard restart). Did another complete driver reinstall along with a reseat of the card, still freezing. I read that this could be related to the power supply. I know the bequiet PSU has the Overclocking option for a single 12v rail, so I tried both with and without that enabled. Also tried a combination of them being on separate rails or the same rail with the OC mode disabled. Nothing fixed the freezing issue.

That being said, I am currently typing from said computer with the 2080ti reinstalled after putting it under a full load with OC up to 265w and no freezing. I was also getting a constant (10000+) error in the event viewer about PCI Express Root Port. I'm still getting that error but not constant anymore (with the 2080ti reinstalled) so it may be unrelated. I don't have another power supply that's sufficient to test to see if it's the PSU or if its the GPU so I'm not sure where to go from here.

Just a thought; maybe try testing both PCIE 3.0 and 4.0 mode, see if freezes using both?

Looks like a PCie issue (haha), coming either from the board or the GPU imo

Did you reset your BIOS ?

Or maybe the card wasn't fully/correctly seated ? Did you try using the 2nd PCiex16 slot (on x8)?

I looked online and from what I found the 3090ti should be able to run on 3.0 correct? I do currently have a PCI riser cable that is only 3.0 but maybe because the 2080ti is 3.0 only its not causing issues?

I haven't reset the BIOS nor did I try the other bios on the GPU (Apparently it has 2) but Ill give it a shot. Its just such a pain because of the custom loop, it's not easy swapping cards in and out.

Yes, 30 series GPUs support PCIE 3.0.

Are you saying that you are using a 3.0 riser with the 3090 Ti? Have you tried without it?

I'm not sure if I found the correct option as I have a cpu and pch speed option. However I notice now that my 2080ti isn't showing up at all in the device manager (didn't end up changing the option yet). I have a pcie 4.0 riser cable coming tomorrow to see if its the cable.

Haven't tried anything yet but I just found out that the pcie slot is gen 5?!?! I'm assuming it can go 5.0>3.0>3.0 which is why my 2080ti works. But like you said, probably can't go down then back up again.

Ah yeah sure, my explanation applies for 5.0 as well. PCI Express got backwards compatibility. Yeah, I think it's the down and then up again that bugs it out.

So after a mixup with Amazon and them saying my package was delivered when it wasn't, I finally got my pcie-4.0 riser cable. To save myself potential disappointment and headaches, I did the best I could to shove the new card in there and hold my 2980ti (trying my best not to crimp the tubes) so I didn't have to drain the loop. Things look good. I was able to give it a pretty heavy gaming load (Unreal5 no fps cap as it was the easiest shortcut for my left hand to navigate) and it seemed stable pulling a peak of just over 400w according to Nvidia overlay.

Now I'm torn on adding a waterblock to the card. On one hand I'm really fed up with water cooling, on the other hand, my 2080ti maxes out at 50c with a 12900k 🤔
