I have a question, instead of using water for my custom loop could I use j20a hydraulic oil?J20A Tractor Hydraulic Fluid is formulated to resist leakage. It contains detergent/dispersant, anti-wear, anti-rust, and anti-foam additives.

it's cheap and I have lots of it sitting around the house

If it won't eat away at the O-rings and can be handled safely and you have responsible disposal routes, then I guess it is fine. A bit like using engine coolant in PC loops.

Pretty sure hydraulic oil isn't a great thermal conductor. Might look cool, and not tear stuff up, but it's thicker than water, harder to pump, and may not actually cool that well

It's a 20 weight oil.  That stuff is not going to flow well in the fins of most heatsinks.  It would be an interesting experiment but have a bad feeling that performance is not going to be good and trying to clean your parts after the fact is going to be very tough.

ive seen a oil filled loop. the pumps were something els and all the tubing was non pc tubing. the blocks must have been custom too but dont remember. back in old day custom copper blocks were the norm.

I don't think that would be a good idea. Water is an excellent thermal conductor. Oil? Maybe it would be too, I don't know, but I would guess your standard PC D5/DDC pumps won't play nice with it at the very least, plus you might have other reactivity issues. And my gut just tells me it will be worse overall performance wise not just because of thermal conductivity concerns, but also because of much lowered flow rate.
