Hey Everyone,

I'm looking at getting a router for my new place I'm moving into which is a duplex. The most I do for networking is gaming and I do have an emby  / unraid server hooked up to my computer and I mainly use everything hard wired other than streaming on a smart TV. Would I need a crazy high AX router?

current options I'm looking at are:

Why do you need a $270 router that looks like an octopus?

Get ANY router, literally any.  I've run Plex and gamed on 75MB/s Comcast and their shit rental.

The fact you listed "gaming routers" kinda scares me.

Besides, you haven't even told us your square footage nor your internet ISP and speeds.

Hey sorry for missing some details,

less 1000sqft for the place and its a duplex so would competing routers cause a problem? As for speeds the plan is 1000 Mbps down, 750 up.

If you are wanting to achieve those speeds (which I'd think so when downloading games) then definitely don't get a cheapo.

ASUS B650E-F GAMING WIFI + R7 7800X3D + 2x Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30-36-36-76  + ASUS RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) Backup: GL.iNet GL-X3000/ Spitz AX Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz) WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz)
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~1200Mbit down, 115Mbit up, variable)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

Would you have any suggestions on one or if any of the ones I linked would work?

ASUS is generally well recommended, TP-Link I only ever use if I can flash OpenWRT on it.

Note I do not have any first-hand experience as I gave up on consumer routers years ago after being fed up of their lackluster performance.  That still remains somewhat today, you can't enable QoS on a Gigabit service or it will slow down dramatically, but generally you don't need it either with Gigabit.

As long as you and the other router are on different channels you should be fine for the most part. The biggest thing you need to look for in a router is the LAN to WAN and WAN to LAN throughputs. Thats basically how fast the router can do NAT. Some router manufactures publish these numbers, some do not.

As far as what router to go for, think about what you need to accomplish. Are there any features besides it supporting those internet speeds you need, for instance. One of the reasons I got the router I got is because it allowed me to track bandwidth usage per device, it allows me to guarantee or limit bandwidth per device. So figure out what features you might need.

Just get a cheapo.

You buy cheap you get cheap. With Gigabit connections cheap routers with crappy SOC's cant do NAT at Gigabit speeds. Im not saying buy a $300 router, but at the very least $80 USD would be the minimum Id suggest, anything less and you're probably wasting your money.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Agreed, but my statement was from before we knew OP lived in a mansion and has amazing internet speed. 😄
