RX 6700 XT 12gb vs RTX 3070 8gb for 2k gaming and VR

My question is in regards to the 12gb vs 8gb.   I understand the performance difference, not being able to futureproof, yadda yadda

 

Should I even consider the 6700 xt 12gb at all, or will the 8gb on the 3070 be enough for 2k frills and VR thrills for a few years?  To elaborate Im looking for people with opinions on what they have seen, as well as personal thoughts on the subject.

The 6700 XT has the advantage in Vram starved scenarios (RE2 RT & FC6 with HD texture pack), the 3070 destroys the 6700XT with anything using RT.

 

Also 2K is 2048x1080.

I would wait to see if there are more price drops.

 

The is Horizon Zero Dawn at 1440p set to ultra showing allocated and dedicated vram. 

This is with a 3080 ti.

8gbs was ok for a GTX 1080 in 2016 but not so great in 2022.

That game runs fine on a 3070 even at 4K maxed out, that's a game that buffers Vram but don't need it.

The buffer is the allocated vram.

Im old, 2k is 2k (1440p) and refuse to change  

 

I have an RTX 2060 and have never once turned on ray tracing, have games that will do it just never think about it lol (that ones hooked to a 1080p 144hz monitor)

But part of my lack of being able to make a decision is do I just go with RT cores, or not lol.

Thank you for that personal experience.  I agree on wanting to wait to see if the price drops.  I have an RTX 2060 I can VR on till then but - what has me wanting to get a card now is that the R9 Fury X in the wifes PC just artifacted (it recovers currently after a couple power cycles, so not sure when its going to go to the land of the dead) and dont want to wait till it pops.

From a performance standpoint, either card is fine at 1440p and it will depend on the game which one outperforms the other. Some the 3070 wins and others the 6700XT wins. What do you play and/or plan to play? If you are planning to do VR with it, having more VRAM is probably a good idea. If you ever end up wanting to play with ray tracing, then the 3070 would be the choice, if not then I think it's just down to which one costs less and if you feel having more VRAM is valuable or not.

 

With regards to the videos posted by @Unedited_Mind - it may be reporting that it's "using" all the 8GB VRAM, but its not running out. Running out of VRAM actually looks like the game dropping frames and stuttering and the system switches to system RAM for streaming in the textures vs the ultra fast VRAM. I didn't see that happening on any of those videos, so I think people overblow the idea that they are "running out of VRAM" or "hitting the limit". That said, I won't disagree with the idea that we should have moved beyond 8GB for mainstream cards this series. We've functionally been stuck at 8GB since the 10-series when it doubled from the 4GB of the 900-series.

Sorry to tell you but in both videos it drops heavily, this is a 260 watt card (Power limit OC) with a 5800x, it is Vram limited, watch them both through. Power draw drops significantly.

 

lol 30 then to 17 FPS in FC6, without HD textures the FPS is near 120 all the time.

For the price of $499 vs $700, i'd absolutely get the 6700xt unless ray tracing was a must

I'm at the point where 12GB should be minimum and 16+ for the higher end cards.  There will come a time when there are "next gen" console ports that aren't ported very good and will have difficulties with 8-10GB.  I've had a few issues with 10GB as well especially after moving to 4k with HDR and RTX.
