Corsair RM650X 650W: sufficient for set-up? (Experiencing frequent crashes)

GRBE

Hi

Recently, I have been experiencing a lot of crashes with my computer. As is often the case, I cannot really pintpoint the direct cause. There is a clear pattern though.

The crashes are very random - they can not occur for hours and then later can be quite persistent (after a reboot, a new crash occurs after a few minutes). The crashes go as follows: small identical squares appear on the screen while everything freezes. After a few seconds, the computer either reboots or goes to a black screen. The sound (often background music from a game) keeps playing. The only way to proceed, is a hard reset. An example (not mine, but very similar) of the screen is attached.

What influences the crashes, is the monitor I use (my ultra wide monitor (samsung 49 L) leads to crashes very often) while my smaller monitor is less prone to crashing (but it still happens rather frequently). I think there is a problem with either the GPU, the cooling or the PSU.

The most important specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel Core i7-9700K 3600 1151V2 box

Motherboard: MSI MPG Z390 gaming plus

GPU: GTX 1080 Ti STRIX GAMING

PSU: Corsair RM650X 650W

Is the PSU sufficient for this set-up?

Thanks a lot for your insights.

Your graphics card VRAM is failing. Your issue is not PSU related, you might want to consider getting a new graphics card or atleast servicing it one last time to see if it anything improves.

It's not a PSU issue.

Looks like the GPU is dying. Did you remove the GeForce drivers with DDU and install again?

That's bad news. I have indeed already uninstalled all the drivers using DDU en installed them again. That did not help.

By servicing the GPU, do you mean cleaning it out and replacing the thermal paste or are there any other specific things I can do?

Thanks a lot for your help already! I really appreciate it.

The picture you included is breed indicative of VRAM instability. It could be overheating or could outright be failing. Do you have a GPU overclock at all? Have you used MSI afterburner or something similar to monitor GPU temps? If it happens while not in games, it’s almost certainly not temp related and is just a hardware failure.

It only happens during gaming. I have never overclocked the GPU.

I will install MSI afterburner and check the temperatures.

Then it could be temp related. But if that was the case, will be hard to determine as VRAM temps are not reported unless it’s a EVGA FTW3 card which actually has temp sensors on the VRAM.

But, it’s possible the fans/heatsinks are super dusty and limiting airflow and causing issues.

The goto fix when having any gpu related issues is replacing thermal paste, some people on reddit used this fix on their cracked Vega64 gpu die.

That might help with temps but not with failing hw.

Degraded thermal pads (or the lack there of) can cause issues with vrams overheating, hence why I even recommended in the first place.

I have never mined on that card. I'll check the condition of the fans, thanks!

could be that the thermalpads on  the VRAM are dried up, or somethign else, i would replace the pads, the paste and clean the card first
