Seeing as there's likely to be a pretty big jump in performance on the next gen of GPUs, I'm thinking PCIE3 is finally going to start hampering me.

 

Would you upgrade to a 12th gen (or 13th/Zen 4 soon)?

 

Or perhaps even sidegrade to a 11700K simply for PCIE4?

 

Or perhaps keep this as a whole unit, build a whole new system when the time comes? (I have use cases for all parts being replaced)

 

I'm going to head off the "Is it doing what you want it to do?" questions as I'm usually the one giving that advice......

This is more of a philosophical question and possibly an existential one.

I would just stay on that system for a couple years and then upgrade everything if the itch gets you, no need up upgrade right now, although I get it with the urges to upgrade as soon as there is a new gen out. I wouldn't worry too much about PCIe3.0 hampering you.

I built a 12th gen for my brother in law.....it's bugging me that he has a faster CPU than me now just to play Comamnd and Conquer Remastered

Hahaha I totally get it, whenever I help build someone a system I am always jealous because I no longer have the latest and greatest and can't live with myself having 2% less processing power under the hood  I am currently waiting until the 40xx series cards to upgrade, as of late I have come to terms with keeping a system for a few years and just waiting for a couple gens to go past and really get that step up in performance. Sucks when you spend like 5k on a system and then the next year someone comes around and spends 2k and outperforms you, but alas that's just the way the PC cookie crumbles. That consumerism will get us

It won't until you upgrade GPUs, even a 3090 only loses 3% (at 1080p, in esports titles) performance on 3.0. 

 

To answer the larger question: you have the money free, and want a faster PC, there's no reason to not upgrade.

Swap the processors without him noticing!

 

IMO if you have the money available go for it, you can even sell the used parts to make some money back.

/buys 4k series card because.....reasons

 

Hmm I'm limited about 15% by my CPU.

/buys 13th gen/Zen4 card because....I need to be able to get that 15% despite frame limiting at 100hz anyway

 

It's a vicious damn cycle

Anyone that builds PCs for themselves and others get's this feeling sooner or later. A buddy of mine who only upgrades like once a decade has a 5800X based on my recommendation while I have an older 9900K still. It's fine. I'll upgrade when I need to.

This is why I have the list of PCs in my sig as long as I do. Hits me every time new stuff gets announced.

 

Over the past 2 years alone, there's at least 5+ that I've assembled for others. Have to fight the urge every time.

It is for current GPUs. We won't know for sure in others. And that's just looking at the interface....if they're as powerful as they are rumored to be, 10th gen might be too slow anyway

If one of the faster CPU can't keep up with the GPU, then so be it

 

It depends on what you do on your PC anyways, and even if you're CPU limited, is the fps not enough?

To me, it's really unnecessary unless you really do have money burning your pocket or if you can justify the cost
