File sync client for NAS

Go to solution Solved by Kilrah,

It's only payware if you want them to host and manage it like businesses may want, but the software is all open source and you can set up your own server as you want, many NAS OSes offer it as a one-click install app.

I would like to setup a NAS and move away from OneDrive. I don't plan to build a high-end NAS and don't have 10G network, so I plan to work on my files locally and would like a real-time file sync agent that works similar to the OneDrive client.

I know there is a huge list of apps that can do this, but what have people found that works the best? I looked at FreeFileSync, but feels more like a scriptable tool than a background app. I started looking at a few others, but the list quickly got so big I figured I would ask here before I start testing. I really just want something I can set/forget, and trust that it will put warnings up in my face if it ever stops working.

Direct IP transport over Local network / VPN is fine, I don't need something that can sync over the internet (but not opposed to that if it still performs well).

EDIT: I am likely going to use unRAID as the NAS server.

If you want something like OneDrive Nextcloud is common.

If you want something local and works on individual folders syncthing might be a good option.

Personally, I've used urbackup and liked it. It does require you to run a server to facilitate the backups, I just ran it in a VM.

Thanks, Nextcloud looks promising, but their page isn't at all clear on pricing. Looks to be more of a company solution saying "contact us for a quote." I see a Try Now option, but I assume that is a limited time trial? Or is it free for personal use? I guess I should have said in my OP that this was for home use.

Thanks for that, while it was unrelated I had always been looking for such a multiplatform time-machine-y backup solution. Bit janky but it works.
