My mom says not deleting internet history can allow hackers to hack you...

BeyondSmash
Go to solution Solved by Suika,

I just read that out to her and I got cut off in the middle of reading that sentence and she said "hey! don't speak to me like that" and "how dare you"

WHAT CAN I DO?!

At this point, there is no arguing with her. Let her go on in her foolish ways, because she seems to be the type that directly relates her authority to a better grasp on general knowledge.

She just doesn't want to see all the sick porn you've recently consumed.

Please give me reasons and statements to prove she is wrong. *She, as my mother even told me "go to hell, I don't care what happens to you" after I told her I knew this information and argued because she says tech people at her job told her that deleting internet history can leave you vulnerable to hacking.

It might speed up browsing by an insignificant and unnoticeable amount

Actually that depends on how old your history is, a friend of mine deleted his browsing history that he had for 3 YEARS without erasing it, and it was like night and day, obviously if you delete it once a month you will not notice anything, but yeeah

First, neither Internet browsing history nor cookies would allow someone remote access to your computer (public network or not). They do however provide additional information once a foothold has been established that can be leveraged to gain additional access to other web services you use. That added risk isn't all that significant.

Second, if you're concerned about privacy on public networks, only authenticate to webservers using an SSL connection.

Third, she's your mother. She created you. Don't argue with her; just nod your head and be nice. Oh, and go clean your room for good measure.

Your mom has a viable point. Not deleting your history means if you are hacked they will read your history and know what sites to hack to get your info or which sites you and you friends visit (address book of friends) to hack one site to get you at that site what ever it may be. Just because you may think your history is BS for hacking does not mean it can't be used for alternative motives, hackers are devious and can probably work around your lack of knowledge of their hacking ways. Imagine them doing a DOS attack on sites they know you visit so they will fly under the radar so to speak, you visit them on a regular basis to the server owners won't think you are hacking them because you regularly visit and have an account so won't block you, there are many angles that is just one.

It really surprises me someone on this forum is not thinking outside the box, your mom seems to be doing just that and probably would be better for us to have her on the forum and maybe you could take a back seat?

yeah, no. if they already targeted you and you are a part of their botnet then even deleting your history won't solve anything since the botnet can extract the data quite easily. also clearing your history still leaves traces that can be used. Besides the chances are slim for this to happen if the sites they visit aren't sketchy and they are not using IE.

Trying to argue about tech is like trying to argue about religion sometimes. Lots of myths flying around that people want to believe. At work it makes more sense where security is top notch. Lots of things could lead to exploits.

We got people trying to hack into medical records at my mom's work all the time. The user has all of its important documents stored into a dedicated server while everything local always gets wiped.

I don't think so that not deleting history can cause the being hacked... But if you got hacked then hacker can see all your data that you visited..

Of course.

So let me ask you something. You delete your history, cache, and cookies, etc. daily? The whole point of this was because my dad's credit card was used. Can you please understand that as I've already stated it in this thread. Also, my mom is a complete non-techie only saying whatever tech people at her job tells her. Thanks for being one sided.

It is awesome if you want to hide porn websites and anime girls you were fapping to, everything else is trough cookies, and hacking trough cookies takes a lot of time, many times it will have no effect cuz of encryption, and really, i always wondered why people hack, it just proves that they have no life, wow, he's going to compromise my computer, he's going to take my credit account, firstly I'm a kid, secondly, i have a windows installataion, you're going to hack me, but prove or get nothing. A problem?

If I were you, I would just follow whatever things my parents said first. There will be a time that will prove you are right and if your parents are really sensible they will start seeing you as the tech guy who knows more than they do and yield to you eventually in tech stuff (and this will lead you to become the free tech support). That's what I do before and now I am the tech support guy for them. You don't lose your parents and you also win the argument eventually.

Plus, what can you lose by deleting internet history. Don't tell me you don't remember the URL for each of the site you go. Even if you do you still have bookmarks. I don't see why this can be a big argument. IMO, you should thank the tech guy at her office for giving you a chance to clear internet history for a very legitimate reason.

Without even reading through the thread or asking for info, I can already tell we're dealing with 30 something-middle agers who use an older version of internet explorer and believe Norton is the best anti virus and other ridiculous things.Careless connecting to open hot spots is what leaves you open to hacking..

Stop stereotyping mister...i am that age.....now if you said she is another dumb or misinformed person then that would be ok as it is only generalizing. :D stereotyping is a no no...

Is that a loaf of bread?

After reading all what transpired all you could worry about is the bread...now you got me hungry bread ummmm

Format her pc (if u dont use it) and go /shrug-hackers ::evilgrin::

Well said @DFPFilms1. What is more important is the banana bread with a bite mark on the table...who is gonna eat that now!....wasting food.

@BeyondSmash just move on if she does not want to listen and DO NOT be angry with her....she could be in menopause. How about talking to your dad about it and hear what he says?
