Question about monitor

Isildur

Hi,

It's important for me to say that i'm not necessarily searching for a monitor, i am however on the market for a new desktop....and i found a really cool deal, very cheap and with a monitor included.

There are some stuff on the PC that i don't like, starting with the case, but that's not why are here at the moment.

This is the monitor i have now:

> Samsung S22F350F TN (more information about it here)

The monitor that comes with the pre-build is:

> MSI Optix G272 IPS (more information about it here)

I'm guessing the MSI is better, even if i have nothing to point against the Samsung at this point, but then again i've only played some casual games since my current PC is garbage.

Both are 1080p, the MSI has a very good refresh rate (144Hz vs 60Hz), better, better response time (1ms vs 5ms), but worst pixel density (81ppi vs 102ppi, whatever that means in real life) and ergonimics (not that Samsung is much better on that). Also, the MSI has G-Sync, so, that's a plus.

So, is the MSI that much better to make me ponder on the build? And is the Samsung bad or not for high-end gaming?

Also, a question about refresh rate, the Samsung has, according to displayspecifications.com, 56Hz-75Hz (why it say 60Hz and not 75Hz?) and the MSI has 48Hz-144Hz (it actually say 144Hz).

As i understand correctly, using the Samsung as an example, the refresh goes goes as low as 56Hz, so, what happens to the image if the FPS of a game goes below that? Or above 75Hz? Tearing? Let say a game has an FPS of 30. So, in other words is better to play between those numbers for a tearing free experience, is that it?

Thanks in advance.

48-144Hz on the MSI is the range for Gsync to work so you will have screen tearing if you go above or below that. I wouldn't really consider the samsung as a gaming monitor, it's an old monitor and not a very good one. Colors are scuffed and the response time is around 20ms compared to 6ms of the MSI(those are real world numbers I'm refering to, not the advertised ones). MSI has worse pixel density because it's 27" and samsung is 21.5", also the MSI is IPS to better viewing angles and more accurate colours. You preferably want 1440p for monitors reaching 27" but in gaming it won't be too noticeable and that's a good size for a monitor overall. Definitely pick up the MSI if the deal is good, it will make your experience so much better.

The MSI is better in pretty much any way. Everything about the Samsung's specs point toward a super-low end crappy monitor.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

The MSI one is a much, much, much better option. Refresh rate aside, it's also IPS while the Samsung one is TN. It should have much better colour and way better viewing angle.

Also it has lower pixels because it's much bigger, that one alone can make the different more than anything else. 56Hz-75Hz probably mean it can potentially do more than 60 fps but not at native resolution.

Thanks for all the replies, but i'm really on a crossroad as i don't know what to do.

For one the MSI is way better than the Samsung (expected), for the other, the more i look at the pre-build the more i don't actually like it, which means that if i get it and will do solely for the monitor, which i don't know if it's a good enough reason.

How do you know that?

I'm not dismissing it in any way, i'm just asking since it's relevant to know this things rather than to actually just follow what is advertised.

Definitely don't get it just for the monitor, the PC itself should be the main focus, you can always buy a new monitor seperately (which I would recommend considering your current one.

The real world numbers come from the fact that manufacturers advertise the monitors with the lowest possible values that you can set but the pixels can't switch most of the colours that quickly so all you're gonna see is massive ghosting. Watch a monitor review by 'Hardware Unboxed' on YT, then you'll know what all the specifications mean and what you can expect.

Your current Samsung is not a good monitor and TN is something I never accept due to it poor output.

That MSI is 27" and for 27", it is better go for 1440p (2560x1440 resolution) instead of 1080p (1920x1080 resolution).

Since you are building a new PC, better check for the spec especially the GPU to be able to handle 1440p well for much future proof.
