Farewell iPod! - Apple stops manufacturing iPods

DeScruff

Summary
Yes this is 2022, and yes Apple was still making iPods. But no more!
In a post on the Apple website newsroom, Apple announced that after 20 long years Apple is discontinuing the iPod line and that the latest model is now available "While supplies last".

Quote

Since its introduction over 20 years ago, iPod has captivated users all over the world who love the ability to take their music with them on the go. Today, the experience of taking one’s music library out into the world has been integrated across Apple’s product line — from iPhone and Apple Watch to iPad and Mac — along with access to more than 90 million songs and over 30,000 playlists available via Apple Music.

Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry—it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared. Today, the spirit of iPod lives on. We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio—there’s no better way to enjoy, discover, and experience music.

My thoughts

I am kinda surprised it didn't happen sooner, specially with the chip shortage and the relatively low price of $199.
The iPod Touch used to be a good way for indie game developers to get an iOS device for cheap to test their games with. But even that use case started to wane as the iPhone started getting features that wouldn't be brought down to the iPod.

Is SanDisk the last one making players like this?

I mean, these days, all you need is a micro SD card and something that can play various music formats.  I finally swapped over to an integrated set of earbuds that do that--so I don't have to lug my phone and rely on BT.

The reason they didn't stop making it sooner? "COURAGE"

Not surprising. I thought for the 20th Anniversary of iPods they would do like a “special” iPod original or even Touch. But nope, it’s officially dead now.

how are you doing today
