Hello,

Ive been trying to find a good couch gaming OS that I can interact with using a controller. I was excited to try SteamOS but it was buggy and kept freezing so now im back to the drawing board. Does anyone have any suggestions? This isnt going on my main pc so im not worried about other PC functionality. Thanks!

There really aren't many good options. Anything Linux based will suffer on the gaming end, with SteamOS probably being the overall best, but still not great. You can use a more stable OS like Ubuntu and use something like Kino as the couch front end, but again, that's not great for gaming.

Basically, your best bet is to go Windows and find a front end designed for controller use. Windows Media Center used to be a thing that was perfect for this, but that got deprecated with Windows 7 IIRC. You can configure Steam to launch in Big Picture mode on Windows on startup, which will likely be the best your gonna get for controller gaming.

Steam big picture mode...

I really think that is the best option

I saw something referencing ChimeraOS. When I looked it up it looked exactly the same as SteamOS. Is it any better?

It's a bit more mature, but again, you're still likely gonna run intot he same issues with it just not working the way you want it to. Windows with Steam Big Picture mode will likely be what you want.
