gtx 1080 desktop vs laptop rtx3060

I have a feeling the 1080 is going to win still due, but is it much better?. Thinking of selling my desktop to get a laptop.

They are pretty similar according to Notebookcheck (which uses a bunch of different games as benchmarks). 3060 is ~5% faster, nothing too meaningful.

Nice, was not expecting that as I assumed power consumption would be a factor overall.

It's pretty much what has happened in desktop too and is basically a repeating phenomenon. For example a 75w 1650 for desktop beats a gtx 780. You'd be surprised how much power there is in little cards.

 

There are new quadro's with gtx980 levels of performance and they don't even go over 45w.

Oh and a tip if you are replacing your desktop with a laptop spend the extra and get the next tier up of card. This will make it last A LOT longer for games.

 

A lenovo legion 5 with a 5800h + 3070 can be found for 1300$.

The kicker is that the Desktop will always tend to run cooler at load.  And temps tend to inversely correlate with longevity.  As someone who has had a litany of top-end gaming laptops--desktops will generally yield less headaches; unless you are very diligent about monitoring temps and throttling/pampering it/anal-retentive about dusting it.

 

It's not even a brand-specific issue...as all brands are pushing for "thin and light" which gets worse (thermally) with each generation.

 

Sager 8662 (GTX 260m)

MSI GX660R (HD 5870)

MSI GT60 (GTX 780m)

Gigabyte P35Xv6 (GTX 1070)

 

Now if you can find that 2-3" thick laptop with heat piping as linearly as long as a tennis court....maybe you'd have something.....

Not really.

The Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 MXM (laptop) chip, that was NOT "Max Q", was identical in performance to the desktop version, except for TDP.  Only the reduced TDP made the chip slower.  The MSI version actually had the full TDP (200W), making it almost identical to the desktop version, and there was a hardware mod (required a SPI flasher) you could do to give the full desktop TDP (250W) on it.  In fact, the MSI GTX 1070 MXM (laptop) version had more cuda cores than the desktop version, so if you did a hardware TDP mod on the MSI laptop version (125W to 230W), it was actually faster than the stock desktop cards.

 

Sadly, all the chips past this chip were all basically castrated chips (all of the laptop RTX Turing and Ampere chips are significantly slower than the desktop versions).
