Oculus Rift Allows Terminally Ill Grandmother to Experience the Outdoors Again

Priscilla Firstenberg, a 2D and 3D video game artist, moved in with her grandmother, Roberta Firstenberg, to help take care of her. Roberta had just discovered that radiation therapy and chemotherapy were no longer working, and that she only had months to live. Her favorite activity – going outside and working in the garden – was no longer a possibility.

One day when "Pri" was debating with a co-worker about the benefitsicon1.png of Oculus Rift over the new consoles, she decided to contact Oculus VR's support center about obtaining a kit. She spilled the story about her grandmother, a story that went around the entire Support group. Everyone, it seems, wanted to help.

Oculus loaned her a dev kit, and she had her grandmother go through the Tuscany demo before her death a few weeks later.

Right in the feels. This is a fantastic usage of current VR tech, and a kindness undeliverable a few years ago. The author puts it:

Anything, it seems, is possible.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei

What a conveniently sappy story, probably good enough for American "reality" TV show contestants. Although it needs a veteran or firefighter in there to seem even more heroic.

I do like these sorts of stories, or the videos of people, usually of an older generation, just being so amazed by the whole experience.

Stuff like this, or treating phobias, PTSD, those sorts of things, the stuff outside of gaming/entertainment really excite me for the Rift and VR in general.

Going to be exciting to see how it all develops.
