Internet speed drop on a better machine

irishbeast

Scratching by head a bit here.

Have 2 decent PCs in terms of desktop performance. One a specialist gaming rig. Got a 500 meg connection shared between both and 1 mobile phone no bandwidth is plentiful

Anyway had the desktop PC in bedroom and this morning was hitting 600 meg over ethernet (those super slim cables are amazing, but that's another discussion)0

Decided to move gaming PC into bedroom and reconnect using the same cable. The gaming PC has better specs and has recently had bios flashed for a CPU upgrade,

Run a speed test and am only getting 10-80mbs which is a huge drop. Tried connecting directly to the motherboard ethernet port and also via a USB converter to my usb 3.1 and usb 3.2 which can transfers up to 1 GBPS

Any ideas as its superb only for this problem. My phone picks up a much better speed.

Any ideas?

Perhaps one of the pairs got kinked in the cable causing it to be limited to 10/100

Unlikely as the cable is quite nee and hasnt been moved. I literally took out of one and just plugged into another.

You would it should be other way around!

Then it definitely sounds like something is limiting the computer to 10/100 instead of 10/100/1000. I doubt any newer computer has a LAN port that is 10/100. I'd check the adapter settings and BIOS settings and update any applicable drivers from the manufacturer website (don't use third party "updaters")

The is the ethernet port on the old computer was a bit hit and miss so bought  aconverter and it was fine.

The converter could handle full speed. 600mbps and above.

With the Motherboard beind as Acus b550M surely they wouldn't put a crap thernet port in it. Even if they did there is no reason why the usb ports won't even work. Tried restating router of course but same. Bloody annoying as I wanted to download games and they was why I recently got the better connection.

Just strange

Balls is looks my like network adaptor in the machine if 10/100

How can that be possible with a board thats less than a year old.

More important how do I get round it. Surely the USB adaptor should have still worked as it would not use the 10/100 port presumably?

Yes, perhaps your cable is too long for it’s spec, what is it?

Imagine everything i have written in a Linus Voice/ linus tone (Spock live long and prosper gif here ,idk why tho, i guess i just want to say that i like star trek and am waiting for new seasons of the ongoing shows), But seriously, a lot of what i type only makes sense when said in a Linus tone from an older ltt video (circa 2017-2019 & now 2024-onwards) basically before he got a beard and a lot of it should make sense even in a Linus with a beard face.

also note as per the latest typing test on my laptop, my accuracy is 69%

I'm not weird/creepy, I'm just observant I have ADHD and am not on any meds for it.

Its working using the USB port.

Has to change the setting of the UDB device to full duplex and its grand. Same doesn't work for the in built ethernet but will look into that another time. Thats converter was such an a great purchase

Might actually have some times to play games this weekend so a 500-600meg connection is handy!
