Simple WAN router/firewall?

Wokki

Hey,

I have Huawei H312-371 outdoor modem and 400/100 connection. Right now, I'm using Asus RT-AC66U B1 as router/firewall. It can do 400/100Mbps throughput.

Is there a simple and small (also cheap, hopefully) solution for WAN router that can do 1Gbps throughput? I think I saw a small router that had 1 WAN and 1 LAN port and claimed to handle 1Gbps connection.. but I can't find it anywhere.

I don't need WiFi or anything because it goes to metallic IT cabinet with switch and it has one job only. And I have separate switch after that.

Edit:

There is nothing wrong with the current setup. I just want to repurpose that old router as WiFi AP else where. And I need a new router.

The only question I asked; Is there a small router with 1 WAN/1 LAN ports that can act as a firewall and dhcp server and achieve 1Gbps throughput IF I UPGRADE my connection LATER TO 1Gbps? Without any extra things like WiFi or usb.

What do you mean by it can barely do 400/100? Your internet speed just doesn’t quite get that fast? Or your trying to pull data off a local NAS or other PC and you can’t route traffic internal to your network at full gigabit?

If your saying you have issues getting the full 400/100, it’s almost certainly not your router. Almost any halfway decent modern router can handle those speeds. The issue is more likely your ISP just can’t quote give you the full speed, or the modem is not great.

If your having issues internal to your network…. It’s also likely not the router.

But, if it turns out you do end up needing a better router (which I sort of doubt…) I have had great success with google/nest Wifi. They are simple, easy to use, and in my experience they just plain work. No fuss, no issues, they just work, and they are actually pretty dang affordable. If you don’t care at all about Wifi, a single puck is like ~100 bucks. But, again, I sort of doubt your router is the issue. What speeds are you getting?

I should have been more clear. Right now, it gets all the time 350-400Mbps. Like is it supposed to. I think the maximum you can get with this is around 600-700 from Wan to Lan...? But I may upgrade my connection to 1Gbps later and also this router is quite big and has unnecessary functionality. So, I'm looking for a small solution that has DHCP, firewall and small size. Then I can use this router for WiFi only and place it some where else.

YOu can get 400 so you alredy have a gigabit router with gigabit ports. Maybe your modem is limiting you or your ISP maybe.

Perhaps on paper but maybe not in reality.

Yes, we need to know what the "across the local network" speeds are to be sure, but not all gigabit ports can handle traffic at gigabit speeds. It sounds silly but take the previous edition of the raspberry pi - it had a gigabit port, but connected to the computer on a USB2.0 interface - it couldn't "get it up" to even half a gigabit speed.

The router may implement gigabit ports in a manner that doesn't let them run at full speed.

Of course, the OP may also just be confusing his connection to the outside internet with the internal network speed.

My connection speed is 400/100 and I'm getting 350-400/100 like it should.

But I want to repurpose that router to be only WiFi AP else where. So, I need a new router that can do up to 1Gbps IF I UPGRADE my connection LATER.

The only thing I wanted to know; is there a small device with 1 WAN/1 LAN port that can achieve up to 1Gbps throughput and act as a firewall/dhcp. No WiFi or anything extra.

What kind of options do you want? VPN server support? QOS? ect

There are alot of options for a SFF router at different price point.

Here an example.
