rx 580 1440p 144hz HDR issue

Hello,

I have an RX 580 system with an HDR capable monitor running at 1440p 144hz. It runs 1440p 144hz fine, but cant turn on HDR. If I lower the refresh rate to 60hz I can then turn on HDR. I suspect it could be too much bandwidth for the cable? Or even the RX 580 - can it handle the bandwidth for 1440p 144hz HDR?

That gpu is not powerful enough for 1440p 144hz. Let alone HDR added

As far as I can see, the RX 580 has HDMI 2.0b and DP 1.4. Assuming HDR means 10 bit per color (10 bpc) here.

 

HDMI 2.0b does not have enough bandwidth for 2560 x 1440 x 144 Hz x 10 bpc. Using the forum's bandwidth calculator, you can see that this requires 17.6 Gbps, while HDMI 2.0 only offers 14.4 Gbps. However DisplayPort 1.4 does have 25.92 Gbps, so technically you should be able to use it instead. Provided your monitor has at least DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 as well.

 

You will also need a DisplayPort cable that supports High Bit Rate 2 (HBR2), which is limited to 21.6 Gbps. Cables are often advertised as supporting certain DP versions, but that is just marketing. Cables are classified by the maximum bandwidth they support and aren't tied to a specific version.

 

Now whether the card actually has enough performance to provide 144 fps at 1440p as @Ryan829 said, I have my doubts. I have an RX 480, which is only slightly slower, and it struggles with 60 fps @ 1440p in a lot of recent titles. It should work fine in older titles, but those probably don't support HDR.

Thanks a lot 😁 Yeah I am aware it's not got the juice for 1440p 144hz gaming, more just so the user experience is smoother and colours of movies looks nicer.
