Would I need to upgrade my GPU for 6 monitors

Fline786

I have a 1060 3gb and I am going to buy 6 monitors. The monitors are 1080p. I heard you need more vram for more monitors

I am using a j5create USB A 3.0 HDMI Adapter for the ports

Do I need to get a better GPU?

Isn't that thing basically a really cheap gpu?

Either way i doubt that you would need a better gpu, for desktop applications.

If you are only using it for desktop, internet and office work use cases, it would be fine.

Even if you would run out of vram(you wont), it would just use system memory i think, and for desktop again, it is fine.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Nvidia only allows 4 displays with GeForce.    You can have displayport splitters and shit but it'll still only allow 4 active at one time.  6 is also a LOT of bezel when nowadays people would just run a larger single / double 4K screen.

to do what on 6 displays?

if the majority of those displays are just running 'office' tasks (webbrowser, stuff like that) it's all fine.

also, from how you're writing your post it sounds like you already have this setup.. dont you know your answer then? does it work, or does it chug to hell?

You only need VRAM if what your doing on the displays actually requires VRAM to run. I assume whatever your looking to do doesn’t require any actual GPU power, and if it did, a usb to HDMI adapter wouldn’t work because that won’t leverage the GPU anyways, it’s literally just a display output.

Plug 4 into GPU, and if your motherboard/CPU has video out, you can use that instead of the USB to hdmi adapter, if not, then yes you will need that adapter. But if your not trying to game on all of them, then a 1060 is way more then enough.

Really? Even on old cards with 5 ports?

IF your motherboard allows simultaneous use of both iGPU and dGPU - many do not but it's more common nowadays than it used to be.

I can't say 100% certainty but I think it's a general driver "limitation" to drive people who want a ton of displays to Quadro.  I know for a fact I couldn't on my 3090.

To drive more than 4 monitors you will need at least 2 GPUs. Even the most modern GeForce cards with 6 ports only support output to 4 ports at the same time.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
