Setup a home server

So im thinking about turning an old Dell Optiplex into a home server and just abit stumped on which software to use for stuff. I plan to run ubuntu on it and then plex for media sharing, but then what do I need if I want cloud storage/nas/ minecraft server for friends? Is Ubuntu still the best choice or should I look into something else? and which software can I use for those purpose?

Ubuntu is totally viable. I run proxmox to virtualize things which is nice, but it may be a "level up" type thing for most people, its not as "easy" to get started since there is a learning curve - it isn't hard, may be worth looking into. This lets you run multiple OS's next to each other under the KVM hypervisor which proxmox runs.

 

If you go with ubuntu, you can make SMB shares, so this can be your NAS, and you can run plex and run docker containers for other stuff. I run most of my homelab on a few ubuntu VM's, but there is also a lot more going on in my setup... But I *could* run almost all of it on a single ubuntu VM if I really wanted, including my truenas ZFS array and shares.
