New gamingbuild around 4k USD

Budget (including currency): 4k USD that is around 40k SEK

Country: Sweden

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly games for now but don't really know which, I want it to handle most of them.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 1440p 120+ Hz

Hello,

I’m planning a new build and need your help choosing that parts so if you have any recommendations please say. I have put together a list below and a couple of questions at the bottom.

GPU: ZOTAC GeForce RTX 3080 AMP Holo LHR

Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-F GAMING WIFI, LGA1700

CPU: Intel Core i7-12700K

Memory: Kingston Fury Beast DDR5 5200MHz 32GB (2x16GB)

PSU: ASUS ROG Strix 1000W

Storage: Samsung 980 PRO 2TB SSD

Monitor: ASUS 27" TUF VG27AQ1A

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv (already have)

And I do plan on overclocking.

The list is about 3500 USD and the extra 500 USD is for a CPU cooler, keyboard and mouse.

Questions

  1. Also need a CPU cooler, should I go air or AIO and compatibility with the my case, what are your recommendations?
  2. Could it be worth buying a cheaper GPU for now and hope that the 4000 series is released with a more reasonably price and buy a new one then or should I just go for the 3080 considering everything that's going on in the world now?
  3. What are your preferred size on the monitor, 27" or 32" at a normal desk?

1.  Air or AIO, makes no difference.  I'd go AIO, that's my preference.

2.  Depends what you're paying for the 3080.

3.  35" Ultrawide.  I'd go 27" 1440p otherwise.

RAM and SSD are overpriced, for your stated needs.  Gaming doesn't need bleeding edge RAM or a PRO SSD.

id be pretty hesitant to spend 4000 on a computer at the moment with GPU pricing. If youu cant wait then be my guest, but overpaying for a GPU like that is really gonna hurt.

27" monitors all the way.

If you want it to be quiet, a BIG aircoolor or 360 AIO could work, although just depends on your case and how you want it to look

I'd change that out for a different board, the Strix -F series is usually way too much for the features you get. The Gigabyte Aorus Pro is cheaper and a more fully featured board, especially if you're gonna be overclocking. Overclocking on a motherboard without a POST code is generally a pain, and if you don't think so you haven't actually overclocked hard enough. The Aorus Pro has a POST code and a safe boot button, two of the most important features for overclocking, and the VRM is still plenty overkill for a 12900k. If you aren't gonna be overclocking that hard, you can save quite a bit of money by going with something like a MSI Z690-A Pro or ASUS Prime Z690-P, both of which will overclock just as easily as that Strix board and the frequencies will be basically the same.

If you want to overclock a bit, because of the thermal density of 12th gen and the fact your case doesn't have the best airflow, it's probably a better idea to go for an AIO 360mm or higher. the Arctic Liquid Freezer 2 lineup is very good for the price.

If you can find a GPU for MSRP now, go for it, we're still probably about 6-8 months away from 40 series and with how badly the 30 series launch went, the 40 series launch will probably be just as bad and you''ll have no chance of getting a card. If you want to wait and get a lower end card then try for a last gen 30 series card afterwards, sure go for it, but I'd just try and get a card now instead.

I've used both, currently on a 32" main with 2 27" side monitors and a 43" up top, and the 32" monitor isn't that much better than the 27". It's bigger, yes, and it is noticeably bigger, but it's not as noticeable as you might think. If it's the same price, or you're going for 4K monitors, yeah get the 32", 4k at 32" is already borderline too high a pixel density for Windows to actually handle reasonable, but if you're going 1440p and the 32" is an extra $50, I'd save the $50 and just get the 27", it's not as much an improvement as you might think (the biggest reason I prefer my 32" over my old 27" 1440p panel I used to main is the 32" panel is a much better display in general, not because it's bigger or anything like that).

I would recommend going this route, so you'll have plenty of funds to spare that you can put towards either better peripherals (keyboard & mouse) or upgrade other things in your room (chair). A good chair always gets overlooked in build upgrades, and I think it's time we started asking more questions and recommending more like that. 🙂

Enthoo evolv is not great for high end gpu:s as the airflow is horrible. Roof is almost completely closed as is the front.

Great help guys, I think I think I'll be waiting a little longer and see what happens with the market. I've gotten good advice both where I can save a few bucks and don't overspend and what I should be looking for when choosing the parts for my usage.

Thank you for the tips 🙂

I'll be back.
