Are there any PCIe NVMe enclosures that allow gen 4 speeds?

I assume USB 4.0 can provide this? Are there any enclosures I can use something like this to get the full speed as an external drive using my laptop?:

No, USB4 aka TB4 is still limited to 40Gbps. You could use a Thunderbolt to NVMe enclosure, but it's still PCIe 3.0-equivalent.

Not yet I believe, USB 4 has been slow to come out overall... when they do finally come out with one expect it to be as expensive as the NVME drive itself for a while at least, well not as expensive as the 4TB one you linked to, but I'd say at least in the $200 range and up... early adopter tax and such.

Nothing external supports full PCIe4 x4 speed, Thunderbolt 3 and USB4 are both 40Gbps so a bit more than half at best, i.e. around Gen3 x4.

Sabrent’s enclosures are pretty reliable in that regard. What specific drive?

I wanted TLC but AFAIK there is no gen 3 TLC, only gen 4 TLC as the one I posted, though it's 4TB.

But that's a QLC SSD. 

The only M.2 NVMe 8TB SSD TLC based is Sabrent Rocket 4.0 Plus 8TB, and it's not out yet

Ps. PCIe Gen 4.0 is backwards compatible with PCie Gen 3.0

I have not yet tried this , but plug into a pcie 4.0 expansion slot
with one of your nvme 4.0 m.2 drives in an enclosure.
Not sure if bios will support boot, but it should be very fast.

sorry, I'm talking about the Corsair MP400 (it's QLC),

The Sabrent Rocket 4.0 Plus 8TB is a TLC, everything is good with it.

I think I misread your post, just wanted to point that it's not worth to look on the PCIe gen 3 / 4, as it's backwards compatible

My issue is also that my laptop can't even be opened anyone other than ASUS. It's Studiobook One, so not only I can't update its SSD inside but also no way to upgrade to next gen, that's why I was hoping I could have a fast external setup using one of these high speed NVMe sticks.

 

Money is not important as I won't have to pay. I guess I will have to wait more for something to come up.

 

There are many USB 4.0 40Gbps NVMe enclosures on amazon though, are they legit?

I just got a PCIe4 980 Pro NVMe in a Jeyi TB3 Enclosure which uses the JHL6340 Chipset. Screen shot attached.

Most enclosures are 10Gbit (1.25GB), some are 20Gbit (2.5GB).  The best you can hope for is an expensive TB4 enclosure which can support 40Gbit (5GB).  Even then I would make sure it supports 4.0 drives.  No matter what you use it will murder iops ratings.

USB4 is 40Gbps or about 3GBps real world. Its the same as TB3 and TB4. You want TB5 (80Gbps), but that’s not out until next year.

But the latest gen 4 NVMe SSDs reach 5GB/s no? That's all I wanted to reach. I thought USB4 or TB4 could reach that speed.

3GBps is still roughly half 5GBps, so you're still losing performance with USB4 or TB4.
