Am I crazy for wanting to upgrade to a 1000w/1200w power supply?

The age old advice of "Get a reliable power supply that has around 100w excess power for your power wattage requirements" is kind of outdated I feel like. I have a mid-range build with a 750w p2 from EVGA. I have a 12600k/ FTW3 RTX 3070. I feel like I am already kind of cutting it close. For the longest time, the "sweet spot" for a higher end gaming build was always 650-750w. With the power draw of Ampere being massively higher than previous generations, is it wiser to go "overkill" nowadays? I feel like if I upgraded to the "13900k" and "RTX 4080" or whatever that would absolutely crush my 750w. Whats the "new" recommendation? I have seen folks on reddit with 850w higher end power supplies with 5900x/3080 etc and their systems are crashing. I feel like the advice is outdated with the power draw of modern components.

Get a Kill-a-watt, see what you pull from the wall. Or get a 1600W PSU on sale and use it for a PC that pulls 350W under gaming load, that works too 👍

Really just get whatever you're comfortable with, so long as it's a quality unit and isn't below the wattage your components pull, you should be good unless you're doing XOC or something.

750w is not cutting it close for that build. just my opinion, but why not wait to upgrade the psu if/when you get a new build. instead of upgrading now for a psu that isn't needed for a theoretically build you might get in the future?

Strictly speaking of efficiency, you want your typical load to be around 60% of your PSU's max wattage. That is (usually) the sweet spot for output efficiency. So if cost is no object, go overkill and aim for something in that range.

 

The other consideration that you mentioned is that new high-end hardware has a tendency to have massive transient power spikes, so aiming high on your PSU's wattage will resolve issues related to that as well.

If you look at new decent/good PSUs the efficiency curve doesnt change much from 20-100% load (look at Corsair RMx or XPG Core Reactor, the change in efficiency is 2-3%).

 

If your PSU is working well with your current setup there's no need to change it. When you upgrade your CPU/GPU and your PSU can't handle it then you should look at the options you have at the moment. If you have money lying around, sure go ahead and buy a new PSU or maybe but some games/new monitor or something else.

You have a P2 750W?   LOL!  You're fine.  You can't "feel" you're cutting it close.

 

If you think you can eventually buy an RTX 4080, cross that bridge when you get to it.

Power supplies are just at a good price right now. I don't want them to be unreasonably expensive next time I need one. I don't know lol
