Drive issue or linux issue

I’ve ran Ubuntu 20 LTS on my prob0ok 445R G6 for the last year. a few weeks ago the machine started to struggle to wake up. it would often wake up but not load parts of the OS correctly and if I opened settings the machine would lockup. Now in the last week its been struggling to boot. Its always been a little hit or miss if I can get the bootloader to start but HP never planned for linux to be on the box. But I’ve now been having it where it will start to load the OS and then fail out, or it will reach the login GUI but I’m unable to attempt to log in

 

I figured it was the cheap adata SSD in it kicking the bucket so I’ve already got a new drive but before I went and did a clean install I wanted to figure out if it was the OS or the drive.

What distro? Or is it custom?  It’s apparently running ext4 for the drives, but there are so many options with Linux.

It's a Generic I/O Error, It tried to read a block and couldn't. Could be a bad Drive, could of just not recovered from a unclean shutdown.

I would re-seat the drive and run a e2fsck from a live media against it and maybe check it's S.M.A.R.T Status.

 

e2fsck /dev/nvme0n1p2

sudo nvme smart-log -H /dev/nvme0n1

I would guess a hardware issue over any software one based on what you're describing. It is possibly the SSD, but based on what you said about parts of the OS not loading it is also possibly bad memory. Bad RAM can do some pretty funny stuff.

 

Might be worth tossing a memory scanner on a USB drive and booting into that to see if there's any issues.

its only loading things wrong when it comes up from sleep which is going to be bad reads from storage

Your drive appears to be unsupported by it. The situation with SMART Compatibility and Linux isn't exactly great. In a perfect scenario GSmartControl actually spits out a lot of useful information similar to what you would see from a Windows utility. You will probably have to use "nvme-cli" to get a basic output.

Dying PSUs are another one that can cause weird problems.

There is a slight chance that your system doesn't support sleep states, but I could be wrong, since Probook and Latitude notebooks generally support Linux out of the box.

How does this fare when using another package family distribution, say Arch or Fedora/OpenSUSE?

Sometimes, kernel versions could also be the reason behind such issues and kernel versions between different package family distros differ by a lot..

Then something changed.  The question becomes what?

for now its behaving normally again. I don't get why but the issue randomly has stopped for now. I've done over a dozen wakes from sleep in the last few days and it seems to be fine

That’s just odd.  Flakiness like that makes me wonder about dying hardware.  PSU or memory or HDD or something.  Might be worth doing the paperclip trick and testing the voltages on the 24 pin of your PSU with a multimeter.  The mere green light of a PSU tester might not do it because close to bad is still good as far as a PSU tester is concerned.

I thought the drive maybe the issue but so far it doesn't have smart issues.

Its all linux provided driver.
I'm going to try the latest patches and see if that fixes anything.

Always worth a shot.  The problem of course it’s that it fixes that but breaks two other things.
