Google embeds camera in smart contact lens

monopolyman

The lenses were developed in the Google X lab and were featured in a patent filing dating from 2012, which was recently published by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The patent filing features a contact lens that includes an embedded circuit, camera and sensor. The control circuit could be linked wirelessly or via a wire to the camera and sensor. The sensor could be a light sensor, pressure sensor, temperature sensor or electrical field sensor, which may allow for people to gain a "sixth sense" of sorts.

It's not like we didn't see this coming... but not this fast, I'm honestly a bit surprised. When Google Glass first came around there were (and still is) a lot of issue regarding the fact that people could be recording without you knowing, this just makes the issue a whole lot worse. Currently they want to give a six sense to the visually impaired (Seems like this is a new thing Google is doing, remember Tango?) so it'll be interesting to see if this is something that we'd only see in the medical world at first (considering the first lens Google made was also intended for medical purposes). It's probably only a matter of time before we see Smart lenses that can perform just as well as Google Glass...

This is actually exciting, imagine watching a game of NFL through the eyes of the QB, or a home run from the eyes of the hitter? Or to just see the world from someone elses perspective (glasses and helmet cams don't follow where the eyes are pointed, just the head)?

It's scary now because we don't like the thought of being filmed unknowingly, but does it really matter? It's not like some guy is following you and filming your every move, that'd be weird, but if you just happen to be in the shot then deal with it. Given the videos aren't being automatically saved to the NSA database for facial recognition to find you if the need arose (it could actually be really good for people who claim to not be at a scene of a crime however).

Imagine this paired with the technology we already have with sending images directly to the brain, this might be the thing that makes blind people see again. Science ftw.
