Ryzen 5 3400G hitting 107 degrees playing scrap mechanic on linux mint

cretsiah

Ryzen 5 3400G  with stock cooler

idle around 45 degrees

game running for an hour hitting up to 107 degrees

requires reboot and bios says something about protecting cpu due to high temp....

Question is would it just be thermal paste or should i get a new air cooler?

current cooler is not making any noise and appears to be spinning

system specs

ASUS Prime m-k motherboard

Stock cooler is not great, but it's good enough to keep it from thermal throttling. There's something else going on here, because you're going well past throttling, with continued heat soak that's causing hard shutdowns. Paste could be an issue, but doesn't really explain this kind of behavior unless it was missing altogether.

Have you messed with any of the voltages or power limits? Also, what case do you have, and what are your ambient temps?

Did you take the Tape off the HSF compound? Change any BIOS settings? Seat the HSF properly?

no

i f you mean running on idle then as listed above around 40-45. otherwise im unsure

its only been happening recently (round about a week ) i'm assuming its not a case of missing thermal paste, but could require replacement ( its been awhile )

its not causing hard shut downs....... but i am having to press the power-off button, due to everything locking up.

what case do you have

its an old Medion case.... no its not exactly the right case for the newer power supply (airflow is wrong) but it didnt use to get this messed up

i also leave the side of the case off.. and have blown the dust out of it

I would still check if the HSF is properly seated. Your CPU shouldn't reach those Temperters

the HSF appears to be fine seating wise.

turned off compositing (which made apps much quicker to open, alt tab seems to work more effectively.

i turned on sensors and told it to poll every second, having done this it says temp starts around 36 degrees

when opening up steam and scrap mechanic it jumps to 55 degrees (roaming around map but no construction)

ambient temp (room temp?) at the time of initial post was around 30-35 degrees

ambient temp (room temp?) last night around 21-23 degrees

A photo of the case (or something similar) would help, as it gives an idea of how it handles air flow.

Jumps in temp like that are ok. Often they’ll just drop again, but if you’re in a game, they may maintain their temps & slowly increase even when roaming around maps (depending on game).

What’s the max temp the CPU reaches at this ambient temp?

I notice you don't have an exhaust fan, that might be worth looking into. You are probably keeping a lot of hot air in your case.
